I may buy the video card from a friend for 15bucks. I was going to put it in a backup system. Would this be an okay video card for quake2, other older 3D games & basic 2D? I never heard of the savage chip before. The system now has a STB velocity128 4MB. Would the savage4 w/32mb be alot faster?

Thank you

This card has the capability to actually play current games. With a decent CPU, it can play games such as RTCW, MohAA, etc at 640x480 Medium quality and still get around 26-38FPS.

I never played Q2 but S4 was great for golden oldies like Q3 and UT (MeTaL) so you should be well happy with it. Just make sure you have the last driver from s3graphics and a maybe a nice tweaker for o'erclocking that mutha.

The Savage 4 works well in Quake III games (640x480 high quality) but since it has been unsupported for a couple years many new games have visual problems.

You may have some drive issues as the Savage 4 has been unsupported for a few years now, and drive support for the Savage 4 was never top notch even when it was new.
Still, it'll do pretty decently for most older games, and if your content with 640x480, and in some cases 800x600 then it can still play current games also.
2D visual quality is respectable, but not especially good. ne positive aspect is it's surprisingly good for DVD playback.

If you can get past any potential driver problems then it'll probably be adequate for older games and basic 2D.
