Stealing Lincoln's Body

I just watched this , it was shown on The History Channel last month, had it on the DVR.
I didn't realize the poor man went through so much after his death. He was moved 11 times in 25 years. Thieves tried to steal his body from the crypt because Lincoln had started the secret service and unified currency. Before Lincoln every state/city had its own paper money. The secret service was formed to go after counterfeiters, they didn't guard the president at that time.

Some guys got pissed because their engraver was put in jail. So they get the idea to steal the body and ransom it to the government for the release of their friend in jail and $200,000.
They failed miserably when they eventually got the coffin out of the crypt partially and it was too heavy to move.

They get arrested and at that time it was not a crime to dig up a body. They could only charge you if you took something from the body , like a ring or watch. So body snatching was not illegal 😕

The caretaker of the crypt got worried that someone else might do the same thing so he put the coffin in the basement and put a pile old wood over it, where it sat for 3 years. People still visited the crypt thinking Lincoln was there, he wasn't.

The story goes on after that and tells how eventually he was put into a steel and concrete form so that nobody ever again could disturb him.

It is a good watch if you get the chance.

I remember reading a story way back in middle school about how when they examined his body after X number of years there were little red and blue fragments all over it and it turned out to be the American flag he was buried with deteriorated.
