Shake shack is the only respectable burger I've found in the city, with the exception of Amsterdam Cafe and Pourhouse, both of which are bars/restaurants.

Hope Steak n Shake is decent.

i like elevation burger.

there's no one standing outside the Steak n Shake as of an hour ago.

SnS has pretty decent burgers for being 'cheap'. Triple Steakburger FTW.

Here it's one of the few places open 24hr that I actually like eating at. Denny's is wretched. It's also pretty cheap too, even if you eat in.

It's not in and out though. I would think NYC would have superior places (such as the venerated shake shack).

Potbelly is the greatest chain sandwich shop of all times. OF ALL TIMES!
There is a Potbelly cafe in Columbus and I ate there and thought it was great.

I went to Shake Shack in Manhattan, waited in line for 30 minutes or so. The burger was raw in the middle. I found the whole experience to be "meh" I think it is just a trendy thing, I don't remember anything that special about the food. Nothing particularly special about the ingredients, just glorified fast food. Steak N Shake at least has the right idea, if you are going to do high volume burgers, make them thin so they can cook quickly. I'm not a fan of rare burgers. Just get the triple burger to get a decent sized burger.

If that one ends up anything like the one near me, they'll be waiting all year for one meal.

Slow as shit.

i have an outlook reminder set for 9:45 am tomorrow. i'll check then. my manager thinks it will be a mob scene at that time.

Let us know what it looks like when you get into work. I work a few blocks away and would walk over there for a years work of milkshakes and drinks when in the area. Not standing in line all night though.

there was a large crowd there this morning at exactly 10 am. they probably would have hit the 150 limit before i got in line. there were probably near 100 right in front of the store and then another 40-ish from the store down bway to the corner of 53rd and then about another 50 people from the corner down 53rd street.

Heh...got a story about that.

We went in with the family for breakfast at 9:30am when travelling one summer. By the time a waitress came to our table, it was 10:10, and she told us "Sorry, we stopped serving breakfast at 10:00"

Lulz...my wife gave the manager an earfull and we got free food.

Nothing special about steak and shake (burger). I watched them make the burgers once. They pullout this small cylinder of meat, its literally a 1 inch by 1 inch cylinder of meat. Toss it on the grill, and mash it down flat with a spatula so it retains its round shape. The cook put all his weight on that spatula so the burger was cardboard thin, but round. It cooked very fast since it was so thin and then they tossed it on the bun and served it.

There's nothing special about their burgers imho. They taste like normal burgers.

That's a matter of opinion. There's a ton of non-chain restaurants other than the ones you've mentioned that make great burgers. Corner Bistro's the easiest one to list. Others that come to mind are Five Napkin, The Burger Joint, Lucky's Famous Burgers, Island Burger. I can name a bunch more but all those burgers are solid and i'm not even counting Five Guys (which is a very controversial topic).

Based on how people describe this burger, I don't think it'll set itself apart. man I want a bistro burger now :(
5 napkin is fucking amazing, forgot about them. But I'm not talking about paying $10-$15 for a single burger, plenty of gourmet places around here have really good burgers. Even 5 guys is decent, but not at $8 before anything else is added.

I'm spoiled, I'm from california. If it's more than $5 and not better than in n out, I'm not impressed.

decades ago i used to kill for some Jackson Hole Wyoming. 16oz burgers. i would not eat for a day just to go there

Cheeburger in Forest Hills isn't bad. they have a few locations around NYC. someplace on the west side i've been interested in but haven't gone to yet
