When you think of long lived game franchises, what do you immediately think of?

Mario? Zelda? Metroid?

All are Nintendo first party titles. I'm trying to think of other real franchises that are out there that people embrace as much as these three. What have you?

Of course more people have played more games that had Mario as a character than any other.

If you want to talk a single game w/lasting power, Counter-Strike seems to have stayed popular as long as any mostly unchanged game that I can remember...

Quake1 stayed longer than Counter-Strike so far :D. Thanks to a massive over-seas following.

Yea but Quake1 overseas has like... broadcasters and stuff. Like a pro sport. It has been a year or 2 though, I don't know if it is still going strong. Deffinitely went further than CS has so far. I think any competitive game could only dream of having the following that quake1 had.

That's what I was going to say. It would seem it's had revisions than any other of the big franchises, just because it's an annual release.
