Staying current in the Cisco world... what's the best way?

I've taken some courses at community college (CCNA, part of the CCNP) and I currently have my CCNA certificate and a certificate from the college as a LAN technician.

However, I am presently studying multimedia arts (I've had an interest in that field for a long time).
My plan is to somehow combine my networking skills with my multimedia skills in my career. What do you think is the best way for both keeping my skills current and also providing a way to practice them? Take more courses or purchase some Cisco gear?
