Staycation > Vacation?

So my thing is: only take a vacation that you really want and are willing to plan for. Like this summer we are going to the beach, something we have wanted for over a year now.

But that means I am NOT paying to go to a destination wedding, a vacationy family reunion, etc. If we are going it is for us and not to meet some sort of obligation.

I just said $1000 since that was a well rounded off number. I think we spent close to that in Florida for the beach (we drove, didn't fly) for 4 days. Vegas was probably closer to $2000 for 4 days.

Yeah, I'd also be happier with seeing the bank account floating higher due to not taking a vacation. I have expensive hobbies so it doesn't help 🙁

Most of the expensive "toys" I buy appreciate in value rather than depreciate though.
 
I enjoy vacations to things that I actually care about. Going to the beach and sitting there all day bores the hell out of me. Send me on a vacation to actually see something (history, art, architecture, culture) and I'll be happy.

I would much rather stay at home than go to the beach.
 
Why not both? I enjoy staying home every now and then. But I also enjoy going to new places and experiencing new cultures. I could never give up travel entirely.

I like both but feel money is better spent on tangible items. All of my vacation memories consist of "that was fun" with no real detail or feeling so I find them pretty useless but I enjoy the actual experience usually.
 
Just staying at home you end up doing projects around the house. Even if you don't really want to it always seen the SO will find things you should be doing rather than relaxing and playing video games.
 
My wife never wants to take anything other than a three or four day weekend. So when I take my vacations she's working most of the time. After being married for almost 30 years that's vacation enough for both of us.
 
Staying at home is what the weekend is for. I love going diving at new places. Been to Cozumel, and Bonaire in the last year, and going to Belize in June 🙂
 
I don't even enjoy leaving the house much. But I also like to make my house better than any hotel or resort. I have a nice big house with beautiful views, a beautiful yard. Comfy inside with everything I need. I live in a gorgeous part of the country. It's relaxing and peaceful.

Vacations are just expensive, hectic, and exhausting (maybe the destination isn't but getting there and back sure is). My mom offers to pay for world travel all the time for us but I usually don't go. Part of that to though is because I have bad insomnia and not the best health however. So it takes way way to much out of me. Staying at home relaxing or working in the yard is far more satisfying. And even though my mom travels all over she always says she already lives in one of the best places on earth and always wants to come home. Some popular world places are even depressing in ways. Pretty lands and things but terrible politics and economy.

When you do these diving trips do you go by yourself or with a SO? Curious cause I want to do it more and go on trips specifically to dive but my wife doesn't like it really. We only did it once but I want to get certified then go on trips for a few days and just dive a bunch every day, but would try to find a club or friends to go.

I go by myself unfortunately. I make sure the hotel I stay at has an on site dive shop that gives tours with dive masters. I would go with my dive shop, but their trips do not align with when I want to take my vacations.

I can't wait for my next trip. The only bad part is hauling all of your gear around.

I love staycations but since I got married, they don't exist. 🙁 I'd love to take a week off and sleep in, drink, play video games, take naps, and maybe work on some fun geek projects.

Honestly though, it depends on the destination. If I have a choice of going back to New Orleans (I was there on "vacation" last week) or staying home and taking a week off, I'll stay home. If my choice is France or staying home, France wins.

As someone who just spent 10 days in France anyone who says that staying home would have been a better use of time needs to see a therapist.

That's cool. I have my own snorkel gear which isn't bad to haul around but I'm sure all the extra scuba stuff is worse. This fall I'm trying to make it a deal to get certified probably in the keys cause it's close and cheaper than elsewhere. I snorkel we there last fall and it was great.

Ah, another person just like me. :thumbsup:

Beach vacations bore me. I don't find it fun sitting on a beach all day and reading. I'd rather do that in a nice, airconditioned house. 😀 When I'm on vacation, I want to learn something or experience the history and culture of the place.

I would kill to go to France every single year. I've been there 4 or 5 times (including Normandy last year) and want to go back in the fall again, but the wife wants to go somewhere else. Pfffffft!

Keys should be nice. Nice clear water, up here in NOVA the water sucks. Plus you might not even need a wetsuit/gloves which is nice for some of the drills. If you buy your own gear prepare to spend about $2000 on it.

Yes, fewer people from overseas visit the U.S. these days. It's a crying shame, but hopefully our politics and economy will get better in the future.
