it's because the new generation doesn't care about the experiences and enjoying it at all. all they want to do is take a pic and post it on their facebook to say they were there and have all of their friends get jealous of not being there.

This, plus the fact that you're not supposed to post about it while you're actually away from home. Burglars welcome.

Tourists mindlessly snapping pics is not a new phenomenon by any means. I actually find watching how other people vacation pretty interesting from a cultural pov.

there is a difference between that and people going to a place, taking a picture, and leaving immediately. shit you should see how many pictures i take on vacation. if i'm going somewhere for a week i'll take probably 1500 pictures. just when i am snorkeling for an hour or two i'll get over a hundred. probably only like 10 or 15 of em are good though heh.

Vacation number two this year starts tomorrow. Only for the weekend though but it will be nice to get out of the house.
Vacation three is two weeks later but that is more of a staycation since I have company visiting.

I do both. Why would you have to choose one over the other? If I only had $1000 to my name I might opt to do a cheap camping trip and still have money left over to buy something.

Besides, vacations are not meant to be "a few days". A few days is a 3 day weekend.

Yeah this also, GF and I spent a week in Mexico, at a timeshare that was free and we still spent 3 grand after flights, food, excursions etc...

There are some crazy cheap locations to visit. Depends on where you live though. If I was in Florida I would hit up South America on a regular basis. You can fly rt there for less than $400. JFK had a special for $800 rt to Cape Town. I can fly RT from CA, FL, or NY to Europe for $510.

Travel can be very cheap.

Every time my girlfriend whines about needing to take a vacation somewhere I can't help but roll my eyes. Vacations are cool and everything but I'd much rather take a few days off, sleep in, and just not have to do anything.

Give me a choice between a $1000 vacation and a $1000 TV/Guitar/ANY tangible object, and I'll never choose the vacation. I hate spending money on things that end up "just" being memories.

Anyone else like this?

Once you've checked off most of the worthwhile things to see in the world, it does get kind of long in the tooth to go anywhere and lose at least 2 vacation days due to transportation slog. Plus, vacationing oftentimes means potential bad weather, getting sick, bad sleep pattern due to time zone differences. You come back wanting a vacation from the vacation. If one doesn't have at least 2 solid weeks (3 preferable), it's difficult to rationalize.

BTW, half of my extended family wholeheartedly thinks like you and have invested their money into a first-rate backyard where they can enjoy most of the sunny CA year drinking pina coladas, barbequeing and lounging....it's like a mini-Four Seasons back there! They view it as better use of the $$$ than my globetrotting.

I always hate when we get home from vacation, took the camera with us, and realize that in 10 days, we managed all of 15 pictures.

Although I'm sure this is at least partially relative to some of your interests I can't imagine anyone even doing this unless you travel for years and years and years. I have spend probably 5 years travelling in total and have a lot left to see! If you have 2 week vacations you'll never see everything in your lifetime. There are entire books dedicated to the 500 or 1000 things everyone should see and countless facebook posts with amazing places to see and people keep adding new things on a regular basis.

Have you been to Bhutan, the Taj Mahal, Tikal, Giza, Caño Cristales, Patagonia, Salar De Uyuni, seen the Northern Lights, Deadvlei, Cape Town, Plitvice Lakes, Dubrovnik, Mostar, The Hermitage, the Smithsonian, Mont Saint-Michel, Yellowstone, Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Victoria Falls, Ungoro Crater, Chobe, the Blue Hole, the Cenotes, Komodo, Jerusalem, Machu Pichu, Brugge, Istanbul, Persepolis, Bali, Kathmandu, Beijing, and of course Stockholm?

If you feel like you've run out of ideas for places to go then simply google one of your interests. Or maybe start a new hobby like diving or photography.

i remember when i hiked at the 7 sacred pools up the mountain 2 miles through the bamboo forest, to be greeted at the base of a 400ft waterfall. that is one of the most surreal experiences in my life and i can remember it like it was yesterday (it was september 2008). my wife and i hung out up there, in the water as well with the 400ft waterfall barging down on us, for quite some time. we had a picnic right up there at the base of it. it was simply amazing.

(and btw, the water isn't that comfortable hitting you from that distance lol, and luckily there were no rocks)

And it is sad. I view this as the future of America:

And we'll all live to 200 years old. Isn't that wonderful?

I bring a camera and often take 0 pictures. But the woman makes up for it and takes hundreds ....

I took a 9 day trip end of last year... will not be doing that again. Way too long for me. I'll stick to 3-5 days from here on out and spend some more time on staycations.

I wouldn't call myself "lazy", but I don't have the general need or drive to go on many vacations. Hell I ALWAYS Have vacation days left over at the end of the year.

Part of this may be because:
A. I'm still young (turning 29 in a few months).
B. No kids

If I ever get to feeling overworked/in need of a few days off I'll take a Fri/Mon off and enjoy an extra long weekend. Then I can do some chores/tasks around home and get some stuff I need done. Plus I can do things I haven't done in a long time like go to the shooting range, wax my car, etc etc.

By the time I'm back I'm always fully refreshed.

Ah, another person just like me.

Beach vacations bore me. I don't find it fun sitting on a beach all day and reading. I'd rather do that in a nice, airconditioned house. :D When I'm on vacation, I want to learn something or experience the history and culture of the place.

Same here. A day or two at the beach is nice, otherwise I like to walk around the cities and see stuff.

Last year I was in Iceland (work), Paris, NY, California, Bruxelles (work), 6 weeks total. This year I've already been to Israel and Berlin, and have bought tickets for two weeks in Japan this summer.

I do staycation in the weekends and short holidays.

Yeah if you're in Paris, San Francisco, NYC, or Brussels it makes sense to walk around the city seeing stuff. However if I'm in Belize or Northern Sweden I have no interest in seeing the cities. I want to see the nature.

Beaches get really boring really fast unless you have a water activity like surfing or diving to do. When I was in Goa though I just sat by the beach reading books. That was a really nice way to unwind.

Yeah, my US trip was half NY/SF and half driving round California to see the nature. So I like both nature and cities.

I'm pretty much in agreement with the OP. I don't care for traveling and I don't have the drive to see the world. I don't mind road trips as much, but it usually still feels like a waste of money.

I can't think of any item that I really want right now. Sure having the latest gadgets is cool but in the end it's also sort-of meaningless.

Every weekend, long week-ends, festive days etc. you have time to veg out and sleep.

Seeing it all is impossible so it never gets boring if you change up your destinations, although you can still go several times to the same place and see different stuff every time plus see the stuff you really liked again.

You know how I know you don't have kids? ;) Either that or they're out of the house.

I don't think I've slept past 8am on any day in years. I remember when it was just myself and my wife we would sleep till 11am on weekends and sometimes worry about missing McD breakfast hours. First world problems? No... kid-free problems.

My vacations are usually tied to skydiving. I'll go to an event for a couple of days, camp out, jump my ass off and then go home with the memories. The actual travel and accomodations usually are pretty inexpensive, rather the cost of jumping is the biggest expense.

I'd rather have the memories than the material goods. Although I need the material goods to make the memories...hmm...

Here is the deal. I am on a Staycation now as my PTO time gets built up and it's easier to burn them down along the way than have way over 80 hours in December and face losing them.

That said, my fiancee has to work...she currently doesn't get PTO time as she's on a 3 month contract.

Your time away from work is priceless (at least to me it is). If you can afford to go to exotic places then do so, if the cost makes it not so fun then stay at home or travel more locally.

One of the coolest things about being here in S. Florida is I can drive 20-30 minutes....an hour or two and be in a totally different environment for cheap during the off-season.

My fiancee and I like saying at the Sundy House in Delray Beach, the Boca Bridge Hotel is also very good. Both of these are less than a 30 minute drive from where I live.

Depends on age of kids and their manners, we have an 11 and 15 year old. I can sleep in on the weekend and we usually do.
