Stay indoors, I am now a certified airplane ground school instructor.

I was looking for something interesting to do while I build hours towards my commercial airplane license, so I decided to get my ground instructor ratings. I took 3 exams today so now I'm certified to teach the classroom portion of pilot training for any rating. I can't do flight instruction in the air yet, you need your commercial license for that plus a separate flight instructor rating.

Here's what I took--

Fundamentals of Instruction: 90%
Advanced Ground Instructor: 90%
Instrument Ground Instructor: 96%

The cool part is that my own flight instructor hates the ground school part, so she's gonna send her students my way. It doesn't pay much but I think it will be fun to try something new.

I met a former Marine Harrier pilot who was also taking tests today, it's cool the people you meet in the aviation world.

update
I started teaching this past weekend. It's pretty fun! I've done about 7 hours so far this week, $20 per hour. I'm instructing two student pilots. We have done lessons on airspace, navigation, weather, and tonight, flight planning. Friday we're doing aircraft systems in depth.

Can you do ground school over the internet? I'm actually thinking about getting my private pilot's license.

I know, I replied in your other thread but it died quickly 😉 Sure you can do that, there's no rule that says you have to be in the same physical location.

I fell asleep or something and then forgot about the other thread, I should go search for it 🙂

How long is the ground school course to get a basic single engine VFR rating?

hehe wanna hear something strange? I can legally sign people off to take exams that I haven't passed myself. For example I can approve someone to take the airplane commercial test, or the helicopter private pilot test and I don't have either of those ratings.

the course my flight school runs is 4 consecutive weekends, about 8 hours each on Sat & Sun. that's for private pilot.

well i took my first flight today, ground school was fun, but i threw up around the last 10 minutes of teh flight (intro flight - 35 minutes ground school 45 minutes air time 20 min post flight)..

The cessna 172 got really fscking hot, and i couldnt deal with it, and i gave control over to teh lady instructor (yeah she is cute but has a bf) and she brought the plane down as soon as she could.
I still feel funny. The last left turn got me sick for some reason. I am not used to looking straight into a left bank. But i had to make sure im not climbing or decending.

oh well congrats. I will IM you with regards to some piloting questions.. or you can AIM me.

What kind of price range does this run?

Would you know what kind of license a Gulfstream G200 or something similar requires?

Can you briefly outline the process and costs associated with becoming a commercial airline pilot, for a person with no prior military or otherwise training?

Into the distance, a ribbon of black
Stretched to the point of no turning back
A flight of fancy on a windswept field
Standing alone my senses reeled
A fatal attraction holding me fast, how
Can I escape this irresistible grasp?
Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted Just an earth-bound misfit, I
Ice is forming on the tips of my wings
Unheeded warnings, I thought I thought of everything
No navigator to guide my way home
Unladened, empty and turned to stone
A soul in tension that's learning to fly
Condition grounded but determined to try
Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I
Above the planet on a wing and a prayer,
My grubby halo, a vapour trail in the empty air,
Across the clouds I see my shadow fly
Out of the corner of my watering eye
A dream unthreatened by the morning light
Could blow this soul right through the roof of the night
There's no sensation to compare with this
Suspended animation, A state of bliss
Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I

😱

don't worry TGG, that's not uncommon. I hope you stick with it, flying small planes around is a blast.

i will stick with it, once i get the FAA medical exam checked out and then figure out how to put this on my FAFSA or whatever, so i dont have to pay for it until im done with my masters.

I want to get IFR rated, VFR is too irritating. I had no idea where i was once i was in the air. I couldnt find which freeway was where. Also the damn propeller at lower rpm's was makign me sick. I fell sick right when i was about to descend towards the airport before giving her the controls. I had done a left bank and a right bank and a left bank and then desending to the airport with power at 1000 rpms, at that point my eyes caught the blades in vision and that was enough to start makign me sick. The heat also added to it. I asked for water on board, i forgot to bring mine, and then i ssaid 'barf bag", oops not that too. So i ended up barfing to the left but mostly on myself ..

after i barfed i felt really woozy, couldnt see, disoriented for a while. I got a lot better as we were on approach for landing, but once i landed i was feeling much better, cause i was able to open the window.. the damn cessna got really fscking hot. Close to 110+... its already a hot day today, so it got even hotter.

I am thinking if i cant get the fafsa thing, i should wait to buy a plane with an AC and get one with a digital display and gps glide slope and IFR stuff and ADF stuff on it. Otherwise if fafsa stuff goes thru i need to find a flight school with AC in thier planes or fly when its cooler.

I think the last time my flight school had a ground school course it was about $300, including the book. That's for a class with one instructor and 15-20 students.

Gulfstream or any business jet would require, at a minimum and in rough order: private pilot license, instrument rating, commercial license, multi engine rating, and a type rating specific to the aircraft flown. you would need other endorsements too like high altitude operations, pressurized aircraft, etc. maybe $50k in training if you paid for it all yourself, but I really have no idea what a jet type rating costs.

I totally know what you mean about the prop. It can be distracting at low RPM. You will eventually learn landmarks from the air, it's all part of the training. You have to be a sharp VFR pilot before even thinking about IFR stuff. IFR makes you work hard mentally to stay on top of things.

Did you have the vents open? Even at 110 degrees outside you can get a pretty good breeze blowing when you're cruising at 100 knots. You can even fly with the window open if you want but it can be distracting. Not too many small planes come with AC.

we werent flying 100kts, maybe 50 if any. i dont remember what was the speed on teh true air speed. I had the vents open, but it was still hot. I didnt open the windows at 3500ft. Its funny i still feel teh woozyness even now. its hot here in sacramento, i have the AC cranked and i still am feeling funny.

Well I am more comfortable with reading IFR instruments, the artificial horizon, and the altimeter and stuff. Even when flying, when looking to see if i was on level flight i would look down at teh artificial horizon to confirm im on level flight.

THe VFR stuff, they will teach when i start taking classes. But i got to figure out other stuff first. It felt really funny when i started to become disoriented, i couldnt see, it was very funny feeling, i did not like it one bit.

This is what I flew today.. Cessna 172. I picked teh 172 over the 152 for the extra size so i dont feel so clausterphobic.

By the way this was a bday gift to myself.. 🙂

Quick question-How much money does a smaller plane run for? And how much gas do they use?

if you mean what does it cost to buy a plane, it can be anything from $20k for a 25 year old Cessna 152 to $450k for a new Cirrus SR22. I usually fly Cessna 172's, they burn about 9 gallons an hour at about $3/gallon.

Stay out of the sky everyone.

I'm kidding, of course,😎

good eye.. yup you got the airport right.. its sacramento executive airport. I used skywalk inc for my ride today.

Ouch, that's pretty expensive gas. There should be hydrogen based airplanes 😉

How much does renting/a club membership cost?

I've always personally wanted a water-based airplane as I live in Minnesota and pretty much everyone lives on a lake, it'd be pretty fun. Waaay too costly for me right now but in the future not so much.
