STAY BACK 200 Feet!
Not responsible for windshield damage!

I've seen this posted on the back of numerous industrial vehicles (dumptrucks, cement trucks, etc). While I certainly don't make a habbit out of tailgating these monstrosities, I typically laugh a little inside when I read these warnings. Do they really think that such a warning would really exhonerate them of damages that would result from their rig shedding material/cargo? I would think not.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

By the way: this is not about whether or not it's okay to tailgate. Only an idiot would tailgate these vehicles. I'm just talking about whether or not the law would hold the owner liable for damages that resulted from "discharged" cargo (rocks, wood, cement, etc).

I agree; if their sh!t damages my car, they're paying for it one way or another.

EDIT: BTW I'm disappointed in you. I expected this to be one of your good rants 😀

Hah, I just noticed that sign on the back of this big dumspter truck this afternoon, and I thought to myself, "this is strange, a little warning like that can save their a$SeS."

Not to mention you have to tail gate them in order to read such a small sign.

Sorry 😉 . The rant will come when one of them loses a truckload of manure and I end up plowing through it.

If you can scare people and prevent the problem entirely, you are better off than if you get sued and then try to warn them later.

yup.

thats all its there for.

They are not warning against their load falling off and damaging your vehicle. They are warning you about rocks on the road surface being flipped up by their tires and hitting your windshield.

I don't know the laws everywhere, but here in BC as long as the truck has proper mud flaps, any damage done to another vehicle by a rock off the roadway is considered a road hazard and the truck that kicked it up is not responsible.
