You guys may have seen my earlier post about trying to get Dolby Digital output to work with Cyberlink DVD and my Audigy 2 ZS. It's not a tweaking problem: the option doesn't even appear in the menu. Others posted that they had similar issues.

I had already sent one inquiry on their website at www.gocyberlink.com, and the response I received was a canned set of directions to uninstall/reinstall. Well I did, and as expected it made no difference. I followed up with another detailed inquiry on their site, attaching several log files as they had requested.

NOT A PEEP back for eight days, and then I get the same canned response.

"We understand your concern about [Cyberlink PowerDVD 6.0 Platinum]. Please be assured that PowerDVD [does support Dolby Digital Output]. Blah blah blah please uninstall and reinstall. If this doesn't help, you're screwed."

Ok, that's not a real quote. My advice is to stay away from this product. I'm out $69. I passed along my experience to CompUSA, where I bought the product.

Why would you buy an expensive DVD player program, when WMP or whatever will work if you have a DVD Decoder...

Haha, I don't need a whole forum. Usually I am pretty happy, but this is just ridiculous.

As to why I spent $69 on this software when I could have stitched together a solution from available components, it's because I'm stupid.

I used to use PowerDVD. I don't know why, but the DVD decoder that came with it conflicted with my OGG audio codec, so whenever I'd run something that used OGG audio (anime fansubs, for example), I'd be greeted with excessively loud static noises. Same thing if I rented a DVD from blockbuster and popped it in with PowerDVD. I never did get that mess figured out, but switching over to WinDVD solved the problem. Not that I think the DVD program is much better than Cyberlinks...I usually just use WMP for DVD movies now.

I have liked the color reproduction and video quality of Cyberlink's player a little better than WMP. But I think Media Player Classic is better than both of them.

So if I want to use MPC or WMP for DVD playback w/Dolby, what do I need? Someone's DVD decoder, and a separate Dolby decoder, or do they come bundled?

Try Video Lan Client or VLC. It is great and plays DVD's.

EDIT: Oh yeah it's FREE

MPC should all on its own AFAIK, including Dolby AC-3.

Color reproduction does not depend on the player, it depends on the codec or renderer. You can get the exact same thing in MPC (unless hell froze over and they did tweaking with a renderless renderer, but trust me, they didn't). (Though unfortunately you can't get their codec without buying the whole software package.) Still, I doubt the color is any different, or if it is you have extensive adjustment options.
