Status of the PPU

Anyone know what the deal is with the Physics Processing Unit? When is it scheduled to be released? Anyone have any idea if games are being designed with it in mind? I've not heard anything about it since the word of it first hit the street...

An update would be nice...

I've heard that it's ready, but they're not going to release until a few games support it. I remember hearing that UT2007 (and presumably other UE3 games) would support it; not really sure what others there will be. I would imagine within the next 6-9 months...

Yeah, but as games get more and more advanced, eventually it's going to take more than that 2nd core...

I remember when they first started discussing it they used the "boulder simulation" thingy, where without a PPU they could create like 4 realistically bouncing boulders rolling down a hill and with the PPU they could create 200 or something along those lines...that 2nd core won't make up that kind of power (not that any games out have rolling boulders...)

The images of the PhysX card I've seen resemble a low-end PCI graphics card. ASUS has stated they intend on offering boards with the PPU embedded. We may also see future video cards that bundle a gpu with a ppu as part of a complete package.

What's interesting to me about this is that progress used to mean being able to tackle more and more tasks with less; long ago, motherboards had little more than a keyboard port and today, we expect integrated audio, lan. . . But now, we need dual cpus, gpus, dual cores, dual video cards and now a new physics processor.

In the long run, it's worth it for better games. Widespread adoption of the technology, however, won't occur until it becomes somewhat affordable or integrated as an option with existing graphics cards or motherboards.

Interresting, so they say Q1 2006? I wonder if any software at all is going to support it at that time though...

It looks like they're saying though that the PhysX or however it is spelled will be attached to their graphics cards...
