status bars in Windows XP

How in the name of God do I get the status bar to appear AND STAY on Explorer and Ineternet Explorer in Windows XP!!!!????

When I go into Explorer by default the status bar is not visible. I can not work without it because I am always glancing down to see how much free space is on a partition, etc. It's annoying as all @#$@% to have to keep going to the view pull down menu to select the status bar.

I've been through tools > options and control panels > folder options and can't figure it out. Can someone tell me before I go insane!!!!

To make it stay
go into my computer,
view->status bar
Then:
tools->folder options->view->apply to all folders

This will make it stay in both internet explorer and all local explorer windows.
