everytime i open another instance of explorer (new, ctr+n), the status bar is gone, even if it's enabled in the current window (all windows even)..anyway to have it enabled by default?..
it's annoying, i hate not having the status bar enabled by default.
When you say "explorer" I'm assuming you mean Internet Explorer. Hitting ctrl+n in Windows Explorer does nothing (at least on my system). I had the same problem but found the following fix:
Start IE and turn the status bar on if it isn't already.
Start Windows Explorer
Click Tools | Folder Options... and go to the View tab
Click the Apply to All Folders button
That did the trick for me. Now no matter how I open a new IE window the status bar is displayed (as it should be!).
[sarcasm]I'd also like to thank Microsoft for naming 13 different Window's programs/components "Explorer." That was a brilliant move. [/sarcasm]
Edit: seems I'm not smart enough to spell "brilliant" correctly. 🙁

well...it certainly works for me 😀 Thanks MrMilney! 😉 Now, I wish that I could set my photo folders to stay on thumbnails... 🙁
I've found the only "easy" way to force a folder to save the settings you want is to do the following:
Open the folder you want to modify.
Make the changes you want to the folder (switch to thumbnail view, etc).
Click Tools | Folder Options...
Go to the View tab.
Under Advanced Settings: turn on or off any of the various options. It doesn't matter which one.
Click the Apply button.
Re-set whatever option you changed in step 5 to the way it was originally.
Click OK
Applying the change you made forces Windows to remember the view you have set for that particular folder. I hope this helps because I personally love the thumbnail view for my folders that contain graphics. 🙂
I guess the reasoning was that those long strings of numbers and obscure status messages were scaring IE users into dowloading Opera! not. Thanks for the tip, MrMilney, worked like a charm!
