I am canabalizing a couple of different computers to make my wife a new one. I have an ECS
P4S5MG/651+ Mobo with 512 Mb of ram and a 2 gig P4. I installed a new 400 watt PS and stripped out a NEC CD-rom from her old Dell and took a FD from an old HP. We got a new WD 80gig HD on sale so I've spent a whole $60 so far.
I loaded the WD HD setup disk without a problem. Now when I go to load the XP pro it does the hardware search and I get a message " INF file txtsetup.sif is corrupt or missing Status 4096. setup command discontinued"
What is this? I used the same XP disk a few months ago for my computer without a hitch. We work for a school and we have an unlimited lincense for XP pro so I doubt useage is a factor. I used this same disk to set up my entire computer lab last summmer.

Your having trouble reading the CD, either a now scratched disk or a flakey? cd rom drive (cables possibly?)

CD is fine. On another website I posted this problem and got a link to a similar problem and they suggested that the WD setup disk was make problems so I tried to re-format the HD. Thats when I discovered that the jumper settings on the HD itself are different that that on the WD CD setting instructions. So I made sure its on primary. I then went back the XP CD and now its caught in a loop of going for 'Inspecting your hardware" going blank for a few minutes and then reboots and starts all over again.

I've had things flake out like that when I had a bad or overclocked memory chip installed. Try runing memtest86. I would also try swapping out ide ribbons. Are you using the ribbon that shipped with the new drive? You should. You also sound like you're not sure about your master/slave configuration. This is different from primary/secondary ide channel. If you are currently running the drive as master try it in cable select mode. If in c/s mode try making it a master.

After all of the testiing, cable swapping etc. I finally went and got a different copy of XP pro.(we have a corp/educational lisence) and it worked like a charm. XP loaded with no difficulty, then MS Office had a problem. So I dug out an old CD-Rom I had and finished loading the software. The NEC CDROM I salvaged was working OK but intermittently would barfup. My old no-name works great. This computer was for my wife's school so we went out and bought a CD-burner and have it in there as well. Looks like these tests we can download only find so much.
