Static sound from front audio ports

I just built my first PC this week. While I've had lot of luck so far, I have run into one issue.

I have to use headphones often, and when using the front headphone jack on the Antec P182 I get a static sound. It becomes louder as I perform tasks, even just moving the mouse. It continues even if I mute the PC. I'm using the HD Audio connected to the motherboard (no sound card). Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Plug your headphones into the rear audio jack, do you still have static? If rear jack has clear audio, then check audio wire between your front headphone jack and MB. Sometimes it becomes unseated inducing noise, in any case it is unshielded and prone to interference.

Yeah, it is just the front jack. The rear is perfectly clear. I checked the wire going into the motherboard and it was not loose. I can't really see the front jack from inside the computer, to check it. The wire runs past the video card and two sata cables. Can this cause interference, or do you think it is a loose wire? Thanks.

If you have slack in the wire, experiment re-routing it away from other cables and components. Because the wire is just a simple unshielded twisted pair, it is prone to pick up noise from surrounding sources. I have been experiencing the same issue, but have the static down to a tolerable faint hum. Fortunately I use external speakers most of the time. I guess if you can't get rid of the noise, you could always plug in at the rear jack... Seems to me that it's a nice idea to have a convenient headphone jack up front, but poor design.
