Static shock to USB mouse on laptop

Quick question (maybe). The other day I shocked the crap out of my laptop by accident. I sat down to use it and a static shock went from my hand through the USB mouse, after about 10 seconds the laptop shut down.

When it rebooted the USB mouse was dead. Touchpad still works fine, as does everything else. So I fetched another mouse (different) to test the USB ports to make sure they weren't fried. They didn't work at all. But then like 8 hours later the ports started working. However, the original "shocked" mouse still would not work. And I liked that mouse so much I bought another identical, and it also does not work. So I know the mouse is not bad, but it keeps giving me this "unknown device" error. I tried reinstalling the software but no luck. Seems to me that maybe somewhere some file related to that brand/model mouse is corrupt? It doesn't even recognize it as a mouse, and it doesn't even power it on at all.

Any ideas how to fix this?
