Static noise and more from sound card & on-board

Good day!

I have a VERY annoying problem which I just can't seem to get fixed!
I'll start with some computer details, just post if you need more.

Desktop PC - Windows 7 Ultimate x64
Mainboard: MSI 870A-g54
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965 (black edition)
RAM: 2x 2GB Corsair DDR3 on Dual Channel
Graphics: AMD Radeon HD5870
Sound card: Creative Sound Blaster X-fi Xtreme Audio
HDD (which has OS installed onto): Corsair F40 SSD
Power supply: Corsair VX550W

What's happening is that when I'm play music on the computer I get this weird static sound in the background and if I try and play HD songs on youtube it all just bangs up and the sound sounds like it's being played through a metal tube or something, it's all too annoying! I also sometimes hear these static noises in the open-folder-click sound and loading-up-windows sound. I think it's all sounds >_>;

This happens with the on-board sound (I did uninstall the sound card drivers and removed the sound card from the computer while trying), the sound card (tried both enabled and disabled on-board audio from BIOS) and this also happens when using my G35 headset which is connected via USB. I think I have messed with every possible sound setting available on Windows 7 but I just can't seem to get this working. I'm *almost* positive it's not a software/driver related problem anymore since I've also done a fresh install anew but it didn't yield any results. I've read a few posts regarding static sound due to a bad power supply, does this describe itself as a power supply related problem?

I did not experience this problem on my previous Windows 7 install which was on a regular HDD and with a different motherboard and cpu. So a faulty motherboard? Lack of power due to new parts? Faulty SSD? I don't know, your guess is probably better than mine!

Thanks in advance,
Elías Andri

Try booting Ubuntu from a CD and see if the problem goes away. If yes, you can rule out hardware.

My Guess is. the probability do you have anything like cell phone or radio.or anything electronic beside your computer.Otherwise bad mobo ground.check all wires to make sure there plug in properly.and also make sure no wires are touching the sound card.everything must be independent.(wires inside case)

Dont know about WIN 7, but in old XP turning down "hardware acceleration" in the audio circumvented a similar sounding issue(s).

Problem goes away when booting from Ubuntu CD.
Also, this is the only computer with these problems in the house so it's not dirty power or whatever.
No new cell phones, radios or any electronics that could interfere, everything worked fine for a year just until now.

To further identify what really is wrong I've recorded 2 sound files which are recorded with sound from both on-board and sound card (bad quality but recognizable).

I know this is an old thread...I ran into the same problem after doing a clean install of windows7. My problem and yours might be the same is the settings for your sound card.

Open control panel go to sound and manage audio devices. Click on your sound device and choose properties then click on the above tab that says "Advanced" In here I changed the sample and bit rate until the static went away. Hope this helps you or anyone else.

Thanks, Greenie68! I was having an intermittent static problem on my Win7 PC, too. I thought my sound card was going bad. I tried your suggestion and it fixed the problem!
