Hey All,
I've tried everything I could think of, so I thought I'd turn the question over to the real brainiacs!
Comcast had originally offered static IP addresses with their service, but appearently, too many people were trying to SELL the hosting of webpages on their home machines, so Comcast had to go to dynamic. Herein lies my quest.... how to use the way DNS works in order to have a "somewhat" static address.
Here's what I've done and know so far.....
The DNS for the machine is linked directly to the IP, so....
If comcast's DNS entry is "machine1.comcast.net" and the IP is 200.200.200.1, if the machine IP changes to 200.200.200.12, then the DNS seems to also change to "machine12.comcast.net". The reason that I bring this up is that I was hoping that perhaps they were referencing the account with the DNS and then assigning the IP dynamically to the account. Wishful thinking... it doesn't work.
I use www.mydns.com for setting up the DNS for the domain, and I can continually go and change the IP when comcast refreshes the IPs (which can vary from 6 weeks to a few days) but that means that I'm unreachable for a couple of days every time the IP changes. I had put in the DNS name for a redirection, but as stated above, the name changed with the IP.... and going with redirection mail service won't work either.
Any ideas on how to manipulate the information at hand to be able to always get to my home server?
Thanks in advance,
Joe
