im using win2k and my brother is using win98.

i've got ICS (win2k) setup so when i dial in he can access the net from his computer. my internal IP is 192.168.0.1

when i was setting up ICS it wouldn't seem to let me set a static network IP address on his computer. Instead i had to set his to "automatically obtain an IP" from my computer each time i log onto the internet. the problem with this? well i can only access his HDDs when i am connected to the net. if i am not connected i dont know what IP to use, as it wont let me set one manually.

is there any way i could give him the network IP of 192.168.0.2 and still have ICS happily use that IP aswell? at the moment ICS assigns him 192.168.0.27 but ONLY when my computer is online. as i have a non-perm dialup connection this isn't very useful.

any help? if i was unclear about what i am trying to achieve please say so, and i'll try to clarify a bit :)

thanks.

I don't see why you couldn't manually assign him an address of the form 192.168.0.x. As long as his computer has an IP that looks like that (whether it came from DHCP or manually), he should be able to share files / access the internet.

you know where it says "obtain an IP address automatically" or "use the following IP address". for some reason i cant seem to get ICS to work if i assign my bros computer with an IP address. It only seems to work if i let my computer assign him one automatically.

i'll have a bit more of a play around with it and see if i can come up with anything.

Be sure to set the subnet mask (likely 255.255.255.0) and DNS servers correctly. You may want to write down the network settings that are being assigned by DHCP, since those obviously work. Just run "ipconfig /all" at the command prompt, and then try manually entering that information.

hmm, still having no luck with this. thanks for trying :)

when i set our IPs manually (192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 with subnet mask of 255.255.255.0) do i need to enter my ISPs DNS servers on both computers, just mine (the one with the connection), or neither?

when i let it assign the other computer an IP automatically there were no DNS servers entered.

OK heres the deal ICS in Win2k uses its own little specailized form of DHCP.

If you have ICS enabled your system will automatically be assigned an IP address beginning with 192.68.0.xx

any system that set up to share that connection will be assigned an IP address everytime its turned on. YOU CAN NOT ASSIGN A STATIC IP while using ICS. This is because ICS uses the IP that you are paying for from your ISP and allows you other computer to access the web through NAT by utilizing the IP assigned.

ah ok, thanks for clearing that up.

how are most other people dealing with this? or was microsofts implementation of ICS aimed at people with permanent connections?

I have no problem using ICS on WIN2K when I assign my clients static IP, but I have cable.

try these settings on your brothers computer:

IP: 192.168.0.2
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS: 192.168.0.1

Also is the internal IP on your win2k box static or dhcp?? Try making it static if it is not but it should be. And make sure that the subnet is the same on both computers. If you don't have the DNS and Gateway set like this it won't work.

ok its finally working. not sure what it was that i changed though :)

one more question...anyone have any idea why i cant see my own computer (or my bros for that matter) in network neighbourhood? both computers are on the same work group...and they can both ping each other with no problems. this has me stumped.

Do you have NetBios/NetBeui installed for a networking protocol, on both machines?? Also you might try installing IPX/SPX.
