Heres my problem: school gives us 1 dynamic address per person. I have 2 computers. Is there a way I can share the dynamic IP address between the two computers so that both of them can get on the internet to browse? I am not trying to do anything fancy, I just want both computers to be able to check email and do searches on the internet. I know one of my other options would be to set up a proxy server or a router but I am not interested in messing with that right now.

I have a 10/100 mbs rj45 hub which is free that I can use if necesssary. Also I know that my university checks to see if the IP address from the packets is within the server's domain so I can't just randomly make one up, nor do I want to get lucky by stumbling onto someone else's IP either. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks

you can put 2 network cards in one computer... hook the 2nd computer into the 1st computer's second network card. the other option is a router. a hub alone won't let you share it.

wait, if it is dynamic, then your university uses a dhcp server? if so, then just hook the hub to the wall, and plug both computers into the hub, and set them to dhcp, so that they will automatically both receive ip addresses. your university will be able to see that they both have ip addresses, but that doesn't mean that they know they both belong to you, unless they want to go physically see them.

oh, yeah, if you use dhcp, you won't take someone else's ip address, they dhcp server will just assign you an unused ip address. should be no problem if that is how the university works. /edit
