Hello Anandtechers,

Without any audio playing, if I crank up the volume on the volume dial, then I can hear faint static noises, and when I move my mouse, I hear a slight buzzing. I know it is not the speakers, or sound card, because the speakers are new, and the interference noises only appear in Windows XP. When I dual boot with Linux, I don't have that problem. Weird huh? In other words, I only hear static in XP and not Linux. I think it may be a driver problem, but I updated to the latest drivers for my sound card. What other sound codecs or settings do you think is causing this. I also tried adjusting the volume sliders and muting them in the volume system tray icon. I am running Logitech z-2300 on Audigy 1's. Thanks.

hook them up to an ipod or something and see if they still hiss.
usually muting mic/line in works.
those are 100 dollar speakers...don't expect too much

In my experiences it is usually the way the OS handles the driver for on board sound which I am assuming your talking about. It's usually because of a cheap audio driver/chipset. If you have the newest drivers it's probably the way your OS is handling the audio. I'm assuming that your linux distro is using a different driver to communicate with the audio.

Throw a cheap audio card in and try it.

I already mentioned it in my post, but I am using Creative Audigy, and I have the on-board sound disabled in the BIOS. I already have the mic and other sound profiles set on mute. Also, I don't see why I need to test with an IPOD, because I have verified that the problem goes away with a different OS that is on the SAME computer while plugged into the SAME sound card. What else can I try, and how do I use SPDIF? Is that even possible with a 2.1 system? Thanks for the inputs guys.

Problem solved. It was the Creative drivers. After installing several different revisions, and getting the same static results, I tried installing a third party driver from kxproject.lugosoft.com. The static and interference noise is now gone when I turn up the volume dial. Now, in movies and music during the quieter moments, the sound is cleaner and sharper without all that hidden buzz lurking behind the scene. I knew it was software related because Linux was working fine and it wasn't using the Creative drivers. Thanks a bunch guys.
