Look, I think smoking is a disgusting habit (I actually think I have a phobia with cigerettes), but the double speak that came from the states on this issue was disgusting also. They sue to recover "costs" from their citizens smoking, then throw on additional taxes on the product not to force people into stopping smoking, but rather hoping to make more money off of the habit. Honestly, if they wanted people to quit they could have easily outlawed the product. But, now that people are actually quitting or changing brands they are suffering because they spent the money and didn't properly calculate the reduction in smokers. Stupid governments, always over-estimating revenue and under-estimating costs.

Actually, that's not really true. People are just being smart and ordering their smokes online to avoid these taxes.

It's a sad, sad day when a smoker can get a carton of smokes delivered from Switzerland for $15, but has to pay $50 at home.

Bans and sin taxes do NOTHING to control vice. I wonder when the authoritarian nanny-staters will finally realize that?

Hey I'm just going by what the article says,
By boosting excise taxes to more than $1 per pack in some cases, states have pushed smokers to abandon their brands or quit altogether. That in turn has threatened the profit picture for leading U.S. cigarette makers, analysts say.
Looks like its true to me...

Fast food, maybe the porn industry...although if they go after the later it might bring us close to another prohibition. ;)

Fast food is definitely next, and SUVs and the cellular phone aren't too far behind.

What do you expect when the government has uncontrolled spending, do you seriously think that federal tax cuts save you money. All it does is make Bush look good, everyone is starting to feel the effects of his first tax cut as states are scrambling to balance their budgets by raising taxes on anything they can find.

I really dont have a big problem with less federal spending and more state spending. This at the very least makes politics more local.

The federal tax cuts had absolutely no effect on states budgets. The amount of money going back to the states form the federal government has not changed. The rate of increase has been reduced.
The states with budget problems are the ones that went on a ridiculous spending sprees in the late 90's.
Dotcom's booming, big tobacco settlements, strong economy, they piled on debt and services like it was going out of style.
Greenspan wasn't only talking about the stock market when he coined the phrase "irrational exuberence".

I saw a political cartoon somewhere of a cow labeled "The Tobacco Industry" at the head someone was about to shoot it and on the other end someone was milking it. NYC raised the taxes on cigarettes to where they cost $8 a pack. Now NYC is losing money because people are buying them in NJ. But according to a report i heard on the radio, fewer kids are smoking because of the price.

Time for the 501-3c's to start paying taxes. They were never really tax exempt/free to begin with. The rest of us tax payers had to dig and pay more taxes so they could play their exemption games.

If it were not for the childish 'Ha ha serves them right' on the end of the title - this would have had a lot more credibility.

I just wish the Republicans in Ohio would stop trying to raise taxes every chance they get.

Is that a rhetorical question?
