State tells Detroit man: Pay for child that isn't yours or go to jail!

But all to often that is the way it is....
For example.....if you have a friend who is having a baby out of wedlock and you say sure use my name as the father on the birthday certificate.....
She can come back and make you pay Child Support and rarely if ever do those things get reversed....

wow.

who the fuck would do that?

Wow so any woman can just write your name as the father and even if you never knew her or even saw this kid, they can just imprison you and collect 30k

If you don't dispute it when you receive the court's notice (or you fall through the cracks), then yeah.

A process server turned in paperwork to the court saying Carnell had been notified of the paternity hearing. The paperwork said the notification happened at a house in Highland Park. Because on paper he had been given notice, when he didn’t show up at court, he was legally listed as father by default.

The article kind of glossed over this, but this man is either lying (that doesn't mean I agree he should be liable for child support) or someone should be punished for falsifying court documents.

edit: The woman should also be punished for deliberately falsly reporting this man as the father.

edit2:
Davis says there are thousands of men in Carnell Alexander’s shoes because Michigan doesn’t have paternity fraud laws that protect men.

When there is evidence a woman mistakenly or purposefully declares the wrong man as husband, it doesn’t necessarily impact paternity obligations.

Whelp, there ya go. More fucked up laws.

You can serve someone who is at the house, you don't necessarily need to serve the person (at least in CA)

I had a coworker who was made to pay. Found out the kid wasn't his, he asked the judge if he gets his money back and was more or less laughed at.

I would go to jail. Civil disobedience.
Let Gov. Rick Snyder (R) explain why his state is holding an innocent man in jail.

Looks like he got a lawyer to take his case pro-bono and will not be jailed pending a followup hearing:

He was in jail at the time they supposedly served him at his residence, though.

In ca that would still meet the legal definition of serving an individual - someone just needs to be at the house to sign for the papers. That person doesn't even have to be related. YMMV on Michigan law

What a bunch of shit.

Poor judge (elected politicians in Michigan) doesn't get to jail an innocent man due to media attention. Sad situation.

Without the media attention and the lawyer he would be locked up right now. As if locking someone up is going to get them to mysteriously come up with 30k.

It's a man's world.

It would be you to throw in the fact that the current governor is a republican but omit the fact that before him a democrat held office for eight years and did nothing to remedy the issue.

Besides all that, that's really more a job for the legislature and judiciary. Executives can lead a campaign for laws, but they don't (generally) get to make them. Of course it's way more fun to just blame someone you don't like, which is why Feminists and Republicans got mentioned well before their incompetent legislature. Isn't Illinois well known as having stagnant and corrupt politicians in general?

look it up on google who the fuck would make such an ignorant statement?

Why would I want to look up stupid people on Google? There's plenty of them found right here on ATOT.

It'd take a pretty epic level of stupidity to claim to be the father for some kid who isn't yours.

They don't even need permission to say you are the father. When my kids were born BOTH times I was told to leave the room when it came time for my wife to sign the birth certificate. Then she said she could have refused to show me what name was on it.

its a fucked up situation for men. They are shit on in custody and shit on when it comes to paying child support.

Only one man that can solve a cock up this big.

It's definitely BS though. Sounds like she was trying to defraud the system and he just got caught up in the typical bureaucratic red tape. Hopefully a lawyer comes forward to help him fight this, so he doesn't have to pay up or go to jail.
