So I'm still using my old Galaxy S3. And I've dabbled a little bit with the voice command features of the phone, but I find it lacking (the speed & the accuracy), and generally not worth the effort.
So I've been paying attention to new phones and any advancements to voice commands. It's probably the one thing that will absolutely get me to upgrade. I like Moto X's "Always listening" feature, but beyond this innovation, the core of what can be done on the phone using only your voice (via "OK Google, xxxx" ) is still rather limited.
What I envision, is able to do everything on the phone with just your voice, without ever touching the phone. For example,
- Launching apps (this can probably be done already)
- Playing specific songs from my chosen mp3 app, from what's stored on my phone, not just Google Play Music ("Ok google, play [song title]", or "Ok google, next song")
- Navigating menu and options within any app.
I use TuneIn alot to listen to podcasts when I'm driving. I'd like to be able to tell the phone to go to a station or podcast name, and then choose a podcast. Ideally, I'd even be able to tell the phone to read to me the list of titles of podcasts available, and then let me choose. So for example, I can have natural conversation with my phone like this:
Me: "OK Google, what are some recent podcasts available in TedTalks Technology"
Phone: "Here's some recent Tedtalks podcasts. 'The science of color', 'the future of electric cars', 'freewill is an illusion'"
Me: "Ok stop, play 'the future of electric cars"
In other words: Star Trek computer level interactions.
I realize what I'm asking for might be bit too much for current-gen technology. But it doesn't seem too far fetch to get the ability to dig into a app's menus and navigate via voice. It requires Google itself to make a big push in Voice Control tech, and app makers to internally add voice features to their apps. We are just not there yet. I understand there are advanced hacks via apps like Tasker to program in a much wider range of voice commands, but it'd be nice if Android phones natively had more advanced voice recognition and feedback.
To me, that is the next big thing. Everything else about phones seems to be at a "good enough" level - processing speed, storage, resolution, extra features, battery life (that one is debatable), etc. But to be able to fully interact with your phone without ever looking at the screen, that would be huge.
Thoughts on this?
