BAGHDAD, Iraq - The Iraqi government declared a state of emergency and imposed a curfew Friday after insurgents set up roadblocks in central Baghdad and opened fire on U.S. and Iraqi troops outside the heavily fortified Green Zone. Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki ordered everyone off the streets of the capital. U.S. and Iraqi forces also fought gunmen in the volatile Dora neighborhood in south Baghdad.

Yes, things are going great in Iraq. They love us.
Pass the Kool-Aid, please.

Sounds like New Orleans.

Damn, I wonder what they'd do for a string of beads?

Call in the National Guard me thinks.
Great! If they do that, they'd finally have to pull them out of Iraq!

His unrelated, purposefully distracting point (which is working perfectly) is that LA Guardsmen (and state troopers) were called into New Orleans to patrol devastated neighborhoods for looters, squatters, etc so that the NOPD can focus on violent crime in populated areas.

Anyways, back to the OP, "last throes" my ass.

I want to say we should pull out of Iraq...but...I look at how in the past we've always kept troops in countries like Korea, Japan, Germany, etc. I think that the history tells us we need to stay. Hell, even when we pulled out of VietNam, millions of people we were trying to protect got slaughtered.

Should we really pull out..will that make the situation better?

So we should stay there what...100-200 years or until they decide to do this for themselves? Don't see any reason why they would since we're there getting our heads blown off.

Like most people he's ignorant about the warrior cult that just can't stop fighting. Been doing so 1300 years. Doing so in every Muslim country right now. Muslim Immigrants in Europe doing so right now.

He and Bush think's like Rodney King. "Can't we all just get along?" LOL Beleiving there's a Peace Dividend possible.

Heh, I think you need to get a history book. Once the USA pulled out, pretty much all teh violence and killing stopped. The south surrendered, obviously, and peace was re-established for the large part. Yea there were some government arrests for political dissidents, but even they got out of prison over a decade ago.

However, that said, I do believe if the USA pulls out of Iraq, there will be a civil war. Hate to say it, but Saddam was doing a great job keeping Iraq in line despite the ethnic diversities. Only a minority of people were actually oppressed, but the vast majority could actually carry out their daily routines without fear of being suicide bombed or gunned down in their own neighborhood.

Realistically, I think Civil War is inevitable. There is not one leader strong enough to keep all of Iraq in line. The country is too fractured: Shia's, Sunni's, Kurds, Religious Fundies, Religious Moderates, etc.

No, what we should do is finish the damn job and get out as soon as humanly possible. This whole waiting-for-the-victory-fairy thing you people have going is getting pretty old.

I agree that a civil war is inevitable. You can't invade an already unstable country, furthur splitting up different religious sects, and expect it to all calm back down again like a good little country. I just feel bad for the next president - he can't pull out without having half the country hate him, and he can't stay without the other half hating him. >.< It makes me wonder though..what part of Iraq did Bush visit that made him feel "inspired"? No doubt the Green Zone. "Oh yes, everything in here is fine, it's just the rest of the country that's falling apart..."

Whatever happened to that concrete wall that was supposed to encircle Baghdad and make things safe?

Iraq to launch huge Baghdad raids
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/4582615.stm
More than 40,000 Iraqi soldiers are to be deployed in Baghdad in a massive operation to hunt down insurgents, the Iraqi defence minister has announced.

...

Mr Dulaimi said the capital would be split into seven areas of operation, and warned that security measures would be far more strict than had been seen before.

"We will also impose a concrete blockade around Baghdad, like a bracelet around an arm, God willing. No-one will be able to penetrate this blockade," Mr Dulaimi said.

It is also hoped that mobile checkpoints will stop suicide bombers getting to the markets and the busy streets, where many people have been killed.
So, did that concrete bracelet ever get built? If it did, it...ummm...doesn't seem to have worked.

Iraqis call state of emergency in Baghdad
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/iraq;_ylt=Ai...;_ylu=X3oDMTBiMW04NW9mBHNlYwMlJVRPUCUl
BAGHDAD, Iraq -
Iraq's government clamped a state of emergency on Baghdad and ordered everyone off the streets Friday after U.S. and Iraqi forces battled insurgents armed with rocket-propelled grenades, hand grenades and rifles near the heavily fortified Green Zone.

...

Defense Ministry official Maj. Gen. Abdul-Aziz Mohamed Jassim initially said all Baghdad residents must be off the streets from 2 p.m. until 6 a.m. Saturday, but al-Maliki later declared the ban would end just three hours after it began.

The state of emergency, which was to continue for an indefinite period, included a renewed prohibition on carrying weapons and gave Iraqi security forces broader arrest powers, Jassim said.

...

He declared a similar state of emergency in the increasingly volatile southern city of Basra at the beginning of June. The violence there continues, however.
And the continued US presence has done what exactly to make things better?

Pull down the burkha and show their noses?

Yes, I know, I'm going straight to hell. How many virgins do I get there?
