I bought it earlier with only a vague understanding of what it is.
I mean, it has zombies and guns - how bad could it be?

I'll be booting it up shortly.

Depends when the reviews were made. When the game first came out on the PC it was an early access title and had a warning a lot of stuff didn't work or wasn't in the game yet as they ported it over.

how about a mini review Mike

I don't think I'm cut out to review the game - I put 68 minutes into it, and I likely won't go back to it.

I'm not cut out to review it because it's open world, and I made the startling discovery earlier this year that I don't like open world games.

The game started with you going around a campground, checking for survivors and gather loot, with the occasional killing of a zombie.

I used my 360 controller and found the controls to be not to my liking - I fought with the camera. I fought with the UI for how to swap items in/out. The nav/waypoint system on the map was OK.

Your friends frequently got stuck and walked into walls ... or 'popped' 25 feet in the world.

The combat felt... meh.

The graphics vascillate between pretty good and bad - there are some scenes that are oddly dark/under-contrasted.

It's not fast action, it's open world, there does appear there could be a lot to do.
Just not my cup o' tea.

Let's just say the game is in a State of Decay.

For real though, I played it on the 360 and it was kinda fun for a few hours but overall it's clunky and repetitive.

I was one of those that played it EARLY, it was very frustrating as I like Mouse/keyboard and it was not supported yet. It was in game but only in a rudimentary way. But even with the struggle to get a grasp of badly mapped (and again, unsupported at the time) controls I kind of enjoyed it. I was hoping for something Better then Dead Island, and in my opinion its much better. Combat is a bit odd, and yes I can see where some would not like, its more about how you go at it, then the actual combat. 1 zombie, kill it, 5, you need to position so you dont get attacked from all sides. it seemed satisfying enough to me, but I was (again I will mention it) struggling with controls, so maybe the difficulty was more then most would have with a gamepad. SO far its the closest to a Decent non ASSHAT DAY Z game.. I would like to see a GREAT PvE one.. DAY Z seems to be one of the best, to bad over half the players are asshats. The PvP is out of hand in that game.

I would suspect the controls have been cleaned up by now, and I will revist.. but the T-DAY sale kinda filled my plate, and recently discovered Craft the World and am a bit addicted so have not went back and seen improvements.
