What is the state of 10 Gbe on OSX, either PCIe cards for older mac pros or thunderbolt to 10 Gbe adapters?

I did a quick survey of the usual suspects like OWC and the situation appears grim. Like, ridiculously expensive for no discernible reason. 10 Gbe NIC cards compatible with windows/linux are like fairly inexpensive, but it seems like all of the thunderbolt adapters are close to a factor of 10 more expensive.

We use the atto nics for older mac pros and xserves. Have also used small tree. I think there is a thing where people use the Intel 10GbE nics and try to use the small tree drivers, but I dont remember if that ended up being viable. The intel nics are only like $250, so its worth looking into if you are looking for the cheapest solution.
