State Car Emissions Inspection SUCKS.

I don't mind helping the enviroment out and my car passed with flying colors but why do they have to take So Damn Long? A new regulation is being passed in Dallas nearly doubling the cost (26.00 to 45.00) and almost the time to get a state inspection starting May 1st. I went in to make sure I could pass the old and new because if you pass the old, they try the new one to see if you can pass it as well. I passed both thank God.

But the bastards took 45 min a Car! :| And they were late starting this morning so I was late to work. UGH! Annonying as hell because these little car care places barely make a dime off this so they don't care if you wait.

If the emissions tests are going to become this complex the state should open up locations where its all they do instead of passing the buck onto unwilling quick lube places.

we had this in Minnesota. there is no charge (well it is actually in the cost of your registration). once you get into the garage for the test, it takes maybe 3 minutes total if your car passes right away.

but they quit doing it in MN because after the 5-10 years or whatever it was that the did it, they found that it had absolutely NO effect on the pollution of the twin cities area.

imo it is just a way for the state to get more money out of the registration of cars. *shrug*

I think it's a waste of money to inspect cars under 5 years old.
Older cars I am all for inspecting. I don't want our country to stink like Mexico :)

I'm sure you are right but its a big risk. I'd rather pay higer property tax than take a chance my car is going to be off limits.

Yea, it was pretty much a joke. If I remember correctly, they did it on all cars at first then after the public outcry, they only required it on cars older than 5 years or something. If you failed, you had to fix the problem or prove that you spent at least x amount of dollars ($200?) to try to fix it. Lots of people just made up bogus receipts and got out of it.

yep. and it was only in the Metro area...so only seven counties. i knew people that registered their cars at their friends house and lived in one of the counties just so they wouldn't have to do testing. it was pretty lame.

Texmaster,

I live in Houston, which has this same silly new testing starting May 1. Add on top the higher cost, the new test will only be available in a fraction of the shops that perform the current test. Knowing this, I had my inspection done last Wednesday, 4 months early! I do not want to wait inline all day with a chance that they won't get to it. There is an area here in West Houston that will have only two dozen stations that can perform the test for a population of 300000+. How the hell are they gonna get those tests done?

Also, don't know about you guys, but recently the new 55mph went in effect. You wouldn't know it though driving on I-10. I was going 70 and cars were still passing me (obviously not rush hour). This nonsense will hopefully be reversed soon.

Perry is looking less and less like the guy I want running this state.

Tex - where'd you get yours done at? I think my car is god to go until next year but just in case it's not I'll probably go get it done before May 1st. (It has a hole in the muffler anyway)

True, but he was quoted as saying something to the effect that this was a good first step for Texas in protecting the environment. Hogwash!

Mine takes 1 minute and costs $12 here in NC. I pull up into the garage, beep my horn, flash my lights (hi and lo), and put on my turn signals (left and right) and bam I'm done. Hand him my registration info and $12 and it's over.

Hell, last time I went was in December of '00. Dumbass punched December '02 instead of Decemember '01 on the sticker. So I got a one year freebie b/c of that dumbass...hehe :D

"Older cars I am all for inspecting."

Oh brother. Mine has both catalytic converters punched through, EGR valve and air pump disconnected, and every other damn vacuum operated device (except PCV) that doesn't help the car run, is removed. It passes every two years. Waste of $20.00 if you ask me.

I believe ours is being discontinued too. Naturally, just as my car reaches the 25 year mark when it would be exempt!

dunno about you, but we here in Oregon run the car into the bay. They plug a hose on the end, we rev to about 4500rpm for a few moments, wait about a minute and get a whole readout thing of the emitions and stuff. I highly doubt we check for as much as your state does, but it hardly takes more than 15 minutes - 30 minutes to get through -and that includes waiting in line to get to the bay.

Please explain how that has anything to do with emissions. It's not just an "inspection" it's a smog check.

They don't even bother to test the emissions here in NC...or at least at the Exxon place I go to. That's the only yearly test required of cars in NC.
