It was just announced that Starz Play is coming to Netflix instant streaming. That means, when the new Xbox experience ships later this year (and you?re a Netflix subscriber) you?ll have immediate access to over 12,000 titles to stream. That is in addition to the 15,000 pieces of video content already available for rental or purchase from the Video Marketplace. Great news for Xbox 360 members who also subsribe to Netflix.

Since this was added to Netflix, this should be included in the PlayOn app.

Cool, but what is Starz Play? Is it basically most of the content that would be available on the Starz channels? I'm not familiar with it so I don't really understand what it is bringing to Netflix. Recent movies that people will actually want to watch?

Is there any known bad reason why one should wait to become a Netflix member until after these features are released?

For the most part yes. They just have an additional collection of a couple of thousand of movies and TV shows that previously weren't available on the Netflix streaming service.

Press Release

The first of the Starz titles -- approximately 1,000 -- are available now at the Netflix Web site, where they are presented in a distinct area accessible by clicking on the "Watch Instantly" tab on the Netflix member home page. More titles will be added in the coming weeks.

Starz Play, Starz' collection of programming content for online distribution, features a wide variety of first-run hit movies, independent films and well-known movie classics, in addition to extreme sports, concerts, anime, Westerns and more. "Spider-Man(TM) 3," "Ratatouille," "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End," "Superbad," "No Country for Old Men" and "Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert" highlight the movie offerings now available to be watched instantly. Starz Play also features new original content from Starz, including episodes of the upcoming dramatic series "Crash," from the producers of the Academy Award(R)-winning Best Picture "Crash," which remains the most-rented DVD in the history of Netflix.

Beginning today, Netflix and Starz Play will offer a sneak preview of the first full episode of "Crash" in advance of the Starz primetime premiere on October 17 at 10 p.m. Eastern/Pacific. "Crash" will remain a staple in the Starz Play programming mix and new episodes will debut day-and-date with new episode premieres.

Wait to see how the service functions - user opinions - possible shortcomings.

Also, I heard in the past that Netflix gives priority to new customers for shipping/queue times. I'm not sure if they have since stopped that practice, but there's that.

Well, I have Blockbuster Online right now so I'm waiting for the new Dash to be released before I sign up for Netflix. I'm taking advantage of Blockbuster's in-store movie exchange until Netflix gets added.

If you don't already have Netflix or Blockbuster Online and you have a 360 and you are interested in movies by mail, I'd say go ahead and sign up for Netflix. If you are just interested in the streaming part, wait until it comes out.

I just took a peak at the Watch Instantly section in Netflix - this is great. There's finally more than a handful of things worth watching, and just as PlayOn adds the ability to stream it to your TV. There are tons of movies worth watching instantly now.

Does anyone have a general idea of how much bandwidth is required to stream one of these movies? Now that I have a cap I'm just wondering what it would take to actually hit it.

Ok, I am only interested in streaming so I guess I will wait. I was just wondering if there had been some kind of rumor or announcement regarding the price of new members for a Netflix account will go up soon after the XBL release. That or something else which would be good to know for those thinking of waiting.

Jeez, I already have 230 items in my instant queue, and a lot of those are TV shows. They need to get this update out ASAP!

Netflix does blu-ray, right?

Yep. There's a surcharge for blu-ray discs though.

Yes, I think it's an extra dollar a month or something like that, though.

EDIT: It is indeed $1 more each month. I have the one DVD at a time plan, not sure if it's more for other plans but it doesn't look like it.

The surcharge is only for new customers right? I have been a customer for about 2 years now and haven't heard anything about a surcharge.
