Startup problems in Win2k **URGENT!**

I recently installed a SB Audigy MP3+ on my computer, and then decided I wanted to get rid of it since I have better uses for 100 bucks. First, I went to the Add/remove hardware wizard, and chose to uninstall the "Creative SB Audigy" device. I then shut down my computer, and took out the card. Then, I turned it back on without putting in my old SB Live card, so it would finish uninstalling all the hardware that came with the audigy. When I turned on the computer, everything started normally, but when the loading bar started (the text-based one before the Win2k logo comes up), I received this error message:
"Windows 2000 could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEMced startup options for Windows 2000, press F8.
You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows 2000
Setup using the original setup floppy disk or CD-ROM.
Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair."

I think the the directory is covering the standard "for advanced startup options..." message, which is why it looks like SYSTEMced. Does anybody know whats going on here?

When the screen comes up offering you the option to hit F8, do it. It will take you to a screen where you can start up in safe mode from which you can remove the drivers and rest of your hardware for you audigy.

its not working, rusty. i tried it a couple of times, but the error message still shows up. it happens as the progress bar is less than an inch across the screen.

You can always try a registry cleaner and try to clear out all Creative related crap. Althought I am not sure if the registry would come into play that early on in the boot up process.

Failing that... umm.. you do have your repair disk handy don't you?! 😀

following some advice from someone who had a similar problem in the os forums, i went to the microsoft knowledge base (i forget the document number - oh wait, here it is: Q269075), and followed the advice there. i renamed the two files specified in the files, and copied the contents of my c:\winnt\system\repair, or whatever the directory in the file said. anyways, while i renamed 2 files to .old files, when i copied the contents of the directory, only one file was copied. i didnt think this was a problem, but when i rebooted my computer, i still had problems.
Now, instead of hanging at the loading screen and giving me the aforementioned error message, it loads past this, and into the graphical loading screen, which displays the win2k logo. however, at this point, the computer reboots, and repeats the whole process again (with no error), and this cycles continuously. the same thing happens when i try to load windows in safe mode.

i would really appreciate some help with this, as that computer is the only good one i have, and i need it since the printer and network stuff is hooked up to it.

Welcome to Microsoft world.
Once win2k is crapped out... its hard to get it well again.
Its harder if you are in NTSF format. At least, in fat32, you could always boot from a bootdisk and delete the files or.. hey wait,

TRY SAFE MODE ! EDIT: oh, already posted, okay, try reinstalling win2k on the current installation with the update option. not the real install. The one that checks errors and missing files.
