Startup on Dell Inspiron 2200

Just got this laptop for my wife, and booting takes forever and a day, cause like 12 things are running in the system tray. McAfee, MSN Messenger, built in pointing device, wireless connection icon, to name just a small handful.

My question is this: Can I disable all but the McAfee via msconfig, and will the other tasks still work (ie connecting to router, the builtin "mouse" etc...) not sure of all tasks running without asking her to get off, but can if helper needs the info.

post a screenie of the list and we can give better advice.

quick and dirty way is petty much anything that lives in Program Files is fair game to trash.

Dell loads their laptops with so much crap! Every time I get a new one the first thing I do is a fresh install of windows to get it running right...

To answer your question though, you should be able to kill most everything you should have something like wltray (I think) that does the wireless. That and McAfee should be all you need to keep. You can play with it and see what works and doesn't work when you disable stuff and can always go back and make changes in safe mode or whatever you need to do.

Thank you. I think I will just go through and turn off one at a time till I get it right.

Probably the notebook is running 256 mb of ram so maybe some more ram since its using the ram for the video also.

Has 512MB RAM installed. I could add more, but my wife isn't a gamer. Fast enough for what she's using it for.

I do think dell does put a lot of crap. The problem with oem's is that they put a lot of junk on their computers. A clean install would be nice but you usually have to remove the restore partition on them. I was assuming it had 256 mb of ram since dell sells a lot of 256 mb ram pc's. I would just clean up the junk.
