Starting Up

Whenever I start up my Dell Insipiron E1505 running Windows XP Professional. It seems to take a long time to load to the point where I can log into the system. It hangs on the "Establishing Network Connections" prompt and the "Applying Security...". Any ideas. I tried defragging and that did not help.

If it's been around a while, I would guess that you might have a lot of installed programs that try to load themselves into the background during startup. To check this, go to Start, Run, then type in "MSCONFIG" without the quotes. Next go to the startup tab and uncheck any boxes to programs that don't need to be there at startup (i.e. - office, instant messangers, ...) but leave vital ones checked (anti virus, firewall, ...).

This is before I log on. I do not think those programs execute until someone logs into the system. I think it is a Registry Key that needs to be changed to lower the time it takes to establish the network connections. Maybe. Just a thought.

Does the sluggishness persist after you login? Do you have any problems playing video or audio (stuttering)?

No not really. I am not really sure though. It is a Core Duo computer. I do have some problems but only if it is played from the DVD/CD drive.
