My highschool PhyED coach, who was in great shape and an avid runner died of a heart attack while doing his nightly jog around the neighborhood. In fact, I know of other healthy people whom have died of heart attacks while running. I'd just do a bit of power walking on the treadmill if I were you.

First if you have no idea where you stand, get a stress test.

They stick you on a threadmill and see how your heart likes it. :)

I find shoes are the biggest thing in running and then a decent trail. You don't want to be sucking exhaust the whole time.

Cardio is definitely important...but I have found heavy lifting burns it the fastest for me.

Even lifting though get a stress test...I have lifted sometimes so much I thought I was about to stroke and in running there will be times you hope to die if you push yourself.

DaTT -- pay attention to JohnCU, GrouchyLadybug, and Howard. Cool Running's Couch to 5k plan would be great for you. You start off jogging and walking short distances and progress to running three miles in 30 minutes. It's deliberately slower-paced for people who aren't active at all, but it works for almost anyone. When you finish the plan, you can go in any direction. It's how my girlfriend and I started running, and it works great.

But you have to stop smoking unless you can run three miles with the lung capacity of a five year old.
