Hi all... my computer is really starting to scare me now !

Since the last time I installed WinXP, I'm having problems shuting it off. When I click on shut down, it closes one or two apps, and that's it... it never shuts down on it's own, I have to press power for 4 seconds. Then, yesterday, I went to a LAN party, and it worked fine. Came back home, and again, I have to press 4 seconds on power. WTF ?!?!?!?

Plus, this has happened 3 times now. I shut down my computer before going to bed, wake up in the morning, my computer is on ! WTF ?!?!?!?!? I don't have any WOx things installed. I don't have a startup time in my BIOS settings, nothing... it just powers up on it's own... And this problem has started before I reinstalled windows...

Is my comp turning into a living being now ?
*remembers the Neon Genesis Evangelion series*

Thanks for any help !

The problem with the computer starting up on it's own is one of three things:
1. You have a modem and the phone line is connected. Your BIOS is set to wake on ring.
2. You have a network card and a cable is connected. Your BIOS is set to wake on LAN.
3. Your BIOS is set to "boot after power-off", and your electrcity is going out at night.

As for shutting down, make sure that you have all of the service packs and other patches installed. Try shutting down applications manually until your computer will shut down. Some applications that are not very friendly will cause Windows to be unable to shut down because that program won't shut down.

For my booting up problem :
1. I have no modem
2. I have a network card, but a) the WOL cable is not connected and b) the WOL setting in the BIOS is not activated
3. I'm the one who shuts off my computer and there is no power shortage during the night.

As for the shutting down portion... why would it shut down at my friend's place, and not at home ? It's the same computer after all !!!

What kind of internet connection do you have?
Maybe at home XP is hanging for the connection. At the LAN it would not have done that.

You tried plugging it in somewhere else in the house? Different powerstrip? UPS?

When I installed a PCI firewire card in my machine a while back, I could never switch the machine off - it would shutdown and immediately switch itself back on. Eventually, after much head scratching, I realised that the motherboard thought the firewire card was an active network card and powered the machine up. Switching off WOL on the BIOS fixed it for good.

But you've said that your WOL in the BIOS is off...*scratches head*

I have a cable internet connection. So did my friend in his LAN party. We even have the same external cable modem and the same ISP.
