Starting Salary for WPI MIS Major

Hey guys,
I'm about to graduate from WPI (Worcester Polytechnic Institute) as an MIS major (Management Information Systems) with a minor in CS (Computer Science), and I wanted to know what you guys think would be a good starting salary. Through the WPI Project system, I have the equivalent of 0.5-1 years of "real-world" experience. My strengths lie in PHP, MySQL, VB .NET, and Network Engineering (no direct experience though with NE though).
Just throwing the question out there 😛 Thanks for any responses, and feel free to offer me a job! 😉 Oh yeah, and I want to work in the central->eastern Massachusetts region. Thanks,

-John

Since you're asking a quesiton specific to your college it would probably help to ask someone from your college because they would track those statistics.

I'd say in the ballpark of $50k though, more in a city.

Well my school gives an average of 43k or something, I was just curious if there were any IT guys here who might have any additional input, thats all :-D

I go to Bentley (in Waltham, Ma).

The average starting salary coming out of our CIS (slightly more technical than MIS) program is about $55k, but that is on the high end compared to what students from many schools see.

What can you really do with MIS?

MIS with a CS minor...pretty much anything. He can go networking, programming, consulting, business analyst, etc. I graduated MIS/CS and started out doing programming and systems setup, moved into business analyst work, and am now doing software quality assurance work.

I graduated from WPI 2 years ago with a major in MIS. Took me about 6 months to find a job that, while it wasn't what I really wanted, gave me the opportunity to later get into desktop support which will hopefully springboard me higher.

My first job paid $50K. I make ~$56K now.

What he said 😛
Yeah I currently have an offer for 40k, and the loaction/company is good, so I think I will take it.

What about just MIS alone? MIS just seemed to be such a broad field. I can see MIS and consulting or business analyst but networking?

MIS alone maybe not...depends on the particular program and the individual's work experience. But like you said, it is a broad field (almost too broad) that can be used to get your foot in the door.

I took an MIS class called "Applications of Telecommunications." We covered just about everything from IP Phones and Internet protocols to routers and software. We also talked about new technologies emergin, such as BPL (although the fate of that technology is unknown at this point). We also had a competition to build a COMPLETE network plan for a medium size law firm. My team had to design the building layout (nothing too fancy) and figure out which routers, switches, pcs, phone system, cabling + drops, software, and internet connectivity. We were even judged by an important security guy from EMC (Where data lives) and a guy from Cisco (His area was IP Phones), and also people from our own Network Operations Center (the WPI NOC, which has a VERY good reputation). Basically, as MIS, you have the potential to do almost anything, what really matters is the courses you take, and how much you choose to learn on your own time. Yeah 😀

Best class I took. Is Loicano (sp?) still teaching it? She was the only teacher in my schooling that I'd ever want to...do naughty things to. 🙂

around here (and this is by no means competitive with most major IT markets) you'd make 35-40k out of college with little solid work experieince. more like 40-45k with 2-5 years of doing something.
