Starting over - Windows XP Home install

I built a new system, hardware working fine, memtest86 says the memory is fine, etc. So I tried to load a copy of Windows 98 on this new machine by using restoration CDs that came with my old Gateway and then using a Windows XP Home Upgrade to do a clean install of Windows XP home. It didn't work (chalk it up to a noob learning experience). So I now have an OEM copy of Windows XP Home (not the upgrdade), but I had a few questions before I proceeded to start the install:

1) Do I need to wipe the HD clean first? The HD on my new system has some elements of Windows 98 on it, but not the full OS. When I boot my new system, the Windows 98 logo screen flashes for a brief second, but then I end up back in DOS with a C:\ prompt. When I do a DIR I see that many files have been loaded on the HD including scandisk, cab files, etc. I would think it would be safer to wipe those clean before proceeding....let me know.

2) If I do need to wipe the HD clean first, how do I do that?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can provide!

put the XP CD in the drive and boot the machine off it. During the install you will be prompted where to install XP and if you want to format the drive first.

Great, thanks. I just wanted to make sure those old files would not somehow corrupt the new OS instal.

I didn't even think about a complete re-format.

I'm a noob.
