starting out with Pretty Good Privacy

I'd like to start using PGP to protect data I have on my computer, especially since I'll be hooking it up to my university network. I know PGP is primarily used for email but Ive heard it can also protect files on the harddrive as well as securely wipe them during deletion.

Does anyone have any experience with PGP or tips on what version to get and where?

I haven't tried PGP yet, but I can recommend gnupg and winpt (GUI for it), and the great TrueCrypt

I've been using it because my job requires it. I don't really have any advice on it, it just encrypts email for me.
