Starting my own hardware site

Since everybody and his dog has their own hardware site, I'm thinking of starting one, too. Actually, had a guide to 3D accelerators a few years back, and been thinking of going back (but with a different slant).

Anyway, I'm just looking for some tips on the most cost effective way to make this site. Getting the URL, hosting (currently has a university account, don't mind free web site), software (I'll likely use EZBoard for the boards, like I did before, but used Netscape Communicator for design, which is a bit old).

My current site (including out of date guide) is at hop.to/seti, in case you want to check it out.

Thanks for the opinion, but it'd be a little more helpful if you provide some alternatives. Thanks.

There's nothing bad about it really, they just don't like it for some reason. I've set up an EZBoard board before, and it was fine, I didn't mind it.

Well, there are a lot of hardware sites around these days... Your best chance is to have an original idea somehow. Seeing the same thing redone with slight differences over and over is very boring, and people don't like it... Success will not come by the following of things, but by the invention of things.

And in case you're wondering, no I don't have any brilliant ideas.

Here a few message board scripts written in Perl, that are good:

SuperBoard

BoardMaster

Ultimate Bulletin Board

Here a some good Coldfusion Message Board scripts( Although, Coldfusion is not as common as Perl, so you may not find alot of web hosts that will host Coldfusion programs)

CFForum

Fusetalk ( This is the forum script used at forums.anandtech.com)

Here is also a good place to find Coldfusion message boards

A good place to find Coldfusion message boards

Also, All of these programs might not be free, just to tell you.

If you are looking for a good Coldfusion host, here is a good host.
They have free subdomain hosting, and there domain fees are very cheap!

If you need help setting up any of these programs, dont be afraid of pming me. I will help.

Also, here are places where you can find tons and tons of message boards

Well, I actually do have an idea. Might not make it the most popular site, but I think that some people will like it. Even when I had my 3D accelerator guide, it wasn't a standard one, since it was aimed at serious uses (programming / animation), and not gaming. There are enough gaming / hardware freaks sites. I'm not much of a gamer, and I'm not that much into overclocking and getting the fastest rig, so I think that I may be able to provide some info for the minority (or is it the silent majority) who don't drool at the sight of a GeForce2 Ultra or Overclocked 1.2GHz Athlon.

Anyway, the idea is not the problem. It's just that I don't have much experience with managing a web site, and would like to get some tips on how to get started, what software to use to build the site (considering that I have limited knowledge of HTML and other web technologies), how to get a domain and hosting for cheap / free, and that kind of stuff.
