any reason why my lower back tightens up when i slow jog, but not when i play bball?

i am thinking its because i am landing flat on my feet when i jog vs. the balls of them when i sprint. At least i hope thats all it is, i can barely walk now.

am i right?

I used to get this too.. Really annoying because i was doing fine but had to stop because of it!

I think its just the posture you hold yourself in when you're jogging, that lower back muscle is just constantly tensed, and gets tired...

It should go away after a couple more jogs..

Also, you shouldn't be landing flat on you're feet when you're running, i always stay on my toes.

maybe your shoes are wrong.

A good runner's shoe place might be able to diagnose any special shoe accomodations that'd help you.

Not a mall store, but a good hardcore runner's shoe place.

There's one in my area that's excellent, which doesn't help you, but triggers the thought that maybe you could find a similar place.

Edit: and maybe you're running on a road that has enough of a subtle arch (side-to-side) that it throws your hips into unevenness. How about trying a different place to run, on level grass, or a good soft rubberized track?

Try leaning into the step when you run as opposed to standing straight. I never had that problem, but if you jog with your torso erect and just your legs moving, I can see it developing.

And get good running shoes like the other scott said. There's a place around here where you actually run on a treadmill for them, and they custom make a shoes to some readings they get. 1 pair costs about $120, but it's worth it IMO.
