I've known the site existed for a while but never downloaded much. Recently I've found myself downloading every days give-away. I might build up an archive of their downloads. Most of it sucks I know but I'm a sucker for free stuff and I'm trying to get away from pirating software.

Anyone else download there regularly?

The concept is that companies offer their products to the site and for one day and giveawayoftheday.com offers that product as a free download. This is not shareware but a legit full edition of the product. The software is only downloadable for one day. It's supposed to be a good way to get word of mouth advertising going I guess. Offer your product for free for one day and hopefully those who download it will tell others about it.

There is also http://game.giveawayoftheday.com/ where a full featured game is given away for a day.

Of course most of these products are small and or from companies that don't have much of a presence. Otherwise they wouldn't need to do this. Most probably are mediocre at best but I'm sure there are many gems. I'm a pack rat so I decided to download every day! :)

This reminds me of all the computer magazines in the 90s that came with CDs full of software. In the beginning, I'd install almost everything. I'd also format and reinstall Windows every three months. Then I sobered up and stopped installing free software I didn't need.

Even so, these websites can occasionally introduce people to software they never knew about.

I'm not installing any of it. Just collecting it.

you're wasting your time, aren't you? Isn't there a specific time period or some kind of restriction like that where you have to install it.
from what i've heard, you can't download it today and install it a year from now.

Right, you have to download and install it before midnight and 95% of the time you aren't able to reinstall it after you reformat. Sometimes you get a generic key that probably could be used later, but most of the time the program gets activated from their servers during installation.

Anyway, there's usually a lot of junk or similar type programs (lots of file converters, backup software, DVD rippers etc), but good stuff does come up. I just subscribe to the RSS feed on my iGoogle page, so I can usually tell by the title if I want to download it.

Also, be warned. Often times the software is a little buggy and can mess up your computer. One program I installed completely broke my right click ability, but luckily the problem went away when I uninstalled it. I wouldn't worry too much about installing a program I needed, but I would not download every piece of software they put out.
