Start menu takes a while to load

Check CPU % in running processes - look for something high usage

Run HD tach to see if HD is running good dma speed

RAM stick going bad - run memtest 86+
 
Do you have an ATI video card and recently upgraded to Cat 5.2's? If so, uninstall drivers completely and reinstall. I a similar Start Menu problem where there was an evident delay between me clicking and it popping up after I installed Cat 5.2's over my old 5.1's. A fresh driver install was necessary to remedy the problem.
