start menu is slow on a p4 ? (EDIT: how to make mouse NOT auto jump)

i have a p4 1.6 w/ 256mb sdram on a gigabyte 8idx. when i click "start" w/ XP pro, it takes like 3 seconds to fade in, same when i then go to "programs". i am just wondering if there is a way to turn off those fades, and if there is any way to just make it fade faster.

The mouse automatically goes to the default answer of message boxes. how do i turn this off?

The fades can be selected/turned off in:
Control Panel > System > Advanced > Performance > Visual Effects

There's also a default delay in opening the menus. You can find that in the registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\desktop\"MenuShowDelay"
