start menu graphics always change

Something happened to my computer so that the start menu icon (in the bottom left of standard taskbar in Windows Me) always changes to wierd graphics.😕 Sometimes it changes to resemble other icons on my desktop. For example if I open Winamp the start menu icon changes to a couple orange lightening bolts, or it sometimes changes to a bunch of lines when I start internet explorer. I don't know if this problem goes beyond asthetics, but I would like to know the cause. Thanks.
