There is a lot of really good under the hood functional improvement. But most of that gets trashed because ms decided to try to use its desktop dominance to get everyone used to its tablet/phone UI and to try to get a larger ecosystem for their tablet effort.

I agree. That's why I said there's nothing new about the UI, not W8 entirely.

Which of course I'm exaggerating but the real point is they should have ADDED whatever new direction stuff they wanted in the UI, not REPLACED things as fundamental as the desktop.

Or a twin of Win7 OS wise, what progress that is .

Don't worry, Windows 8 still features negative one more windows media centers than Windows 7 so there's that feature that should get people rushing out to spend their money upgrading. 😛

They need to incorporate a task bar so to manage metro apps (a la google android).

The back and forth between desktop and metro ui is confusing my GF and frustrating to me.

When you click the start button in Windows 8 I think some Mark Morrison should play... 'Return of the Mack'

Finally MS realizes people still need computers and not just toys/appliances

Bring back DOS,don't need no start button, things were both simple and complicated back then 😉 oh and no Windows bloatware .

They are not bringing back the start menu. They are bringing back the start button.

LoL. Just a button?

*click*
...

:|?

So we can sit around all day booting from floppies, changing directories, renaming files, running chkdsk, and directing output to PRN? wooo, fun 🙄

I had in mind some windows update and next time you turn the pc on it would do that. But I have classic shell on my pc already. Didn't bother me using metro on my desktop for a while and I still know some of the shortcuts.

But classic shell just makes it easier. It's annoying that there's a small stutter glitch when it boots. It loads the task bar immediately in windows after boot and the background is still metro for a second or so but it isn't a big pain.
