That was the game that made me get highspeed internet.
When Tribes was out, I was working at an ISP as the sole employee besides the guy who owned it. He went on vacaction for a week, so I brought my desktop PC up to the office, plugged it into the lan, and played Tribes on the T1 all week. It was soooo much better than playing on the modem at home.

I loved the Raindance map - it wasn't very popular, but it was a cool map with rain all the time.

Tribes 2 was fun too, but the community was full of idiots. The developers getting shut down didn't help either. The game had a ton of potential, but since it was rushed out, a lot of things suffered. There were some great mods - and the best part was they were all server-side so you didn't have to download anything to play them. MouseMod was a personal favorite, the cloak pack had unlimited energy and the shocklance would instagib people if you snuck up behind them. Your jetpack used energy at an alarming rate, so you had to be careful and were mostly stuck moving around without it. The MouseMod maps were amazing too.

Tribes: Vengance was pretty "blah". Played the demo and didn't like it at all.

Try PlanetSide, its free to download and play now, no credit card needed 🙂

It reminds me a good deal of tribes.

That's also a great game. Almost achieves the same level as Tribes. It's free now? I seem to remember it having some monthly fees.

Not anymore, unless you want to get past the rank caps, then you have to pay.

"need repairs" 😛

I sucked ass at this game, couldn't ever get a hang of the ski flying or whatever, the speed sort of left me weirded out. That said...I had a surprisingly fun time just running around and repairing generators and the like with the repair laser thing.

no, Rollercoaster was the place to practice flying. you could take that scout right thru the flag area and keep on going!

the starsiege game series had a mech game back in the day. it was so awful i swore never to give money to that franchise again. it basically required 2 people to play in order to operate the mech properly. so i never played tribes.

Was that the desert (I think level) with the long stretch of land in between floating bases? And each base had a vehicle station on top?

I was in a Clan for Tribes. I loved that game. I had the first copy of Tribes 2 in my city, and loved that one, too.

I installed it a while back just for nostalgia, and couldn't believe how dated the graphics were...

Found my old CD with Tribes on it and installed the latest patches and loaded it up on my laptop.

The sounds, the visuals, the mechanics of the game...**sniff sniff** Oh the hours I wasted on this game many moons ago.

The only game that ever came close to "doing it for for me" in recent years has been BF1942

"SHAZBOT!!!!!!!"

Great game. I wish they made something that good again. What was your SN?

How is PlanetSide anyways? Can you do tricks like disc mine in the air?

It was a super fun game.
I think what ultimately killed the fun, was the level of competition. Towards the end, some of the Clans were so good, I couldn't CTF any more liek I could on public servers in the old days.

The only time it was almost fun to lose was the first time we played against Imperial Elite and got beated some soundly we were just in awe of the player's abilities.
