The whole enchilada.

If you are a student, researcher, staff, or faculty member you can download StarOffice 8 for free from Sun's Software Download Center.
Login into the Sun Software Download Center by using your user name and password.
If you do not have a user name or password for the Sun Software Download Center please register.
Also, free web based training.

The thorn in the side of M$.

Can the whole state of Massachusetts be wrong?
See the eweek article Opinion: In 100 years, will a version of Microsoft Word exist that will read a Word document created in the year 2005?

Sun's always been awesome! However, what are the academic requirements/how do you apply as a student?

Does this load any faster than OpenOffice? That thing takes a year and a half to open a word processing document.

I don't see any differences between Star Offince and OpenOffice. It seems to be faster once it is running from memory in the background, but it seems to use a lot of memory.

You don't think that possibly there might be a M$ hook or two in the OS that might make the M$Office apps load quicker, do you? Naw. Too much like MIB!

Steve, Agreed.
I have just finished trying it and find that it loads within a tick or a tock of M$. Not only that, I just wrung out the calc part of the program and found a remarkable degree of compatibility with Excel. And, I consider Excel to be the cat's meow of the MS fleet. SO calc is hot!

No such a thing as a dumb question, as they say.
Just so you don't think of yourself in some exclusive club...
I downloaded the Solaris package and then couldn't figure out why it wouldn't install in Windows.
(Then I noticed the file extension.:confused::roll;))DOH!

Nice find. Downloading as well. Always wanted to compare to Office.

If you don't mind, please let us know how it compares.

i havent used it that much yet, but so far it's a pretty damn good alternative to MS.

the word processor works just about as well as Word, though it doesn't have MS's awesome Equation Editor, which i use to death.

i haven't used Calc (spreadsheet thing), but i doubt it'll match Excel.

the powerpoint application seems to work as well as Powerpoint, but i bet it doesn't have the super-duper fancy stuff that Powerpoint has, which most people won't use anyway.

The Drawing program is really nifty, though. It's like a streamlined Visio. It's really good for drawing simple diagrams and doing flowcharts, etc.

so for the price, ME RIKEY A ROT! awesome awesome Office alternative.

i haven't used OpenOffice, so i can't comment on all three

I just don't know why people choose staroffice over openoffice 2.0. In my opinion, openoffice 2.0 now is as good as office xp.

What is the difference between StarOffice and OpenOffice?
I run OpenOffice on my work computer as I don't need e-mail on it, and it's that or our crappy old office 2000. OpenOffice seems to work fine but has a couple of formatting when printing issues with Excel files.

Coolio.. I forgot about 2.0... and it is now released.. would be my preference.. but I deal with loads and loads of word docs formatted in funny ways in the pharma industry (does it play well with all word formatting?) ... but for home use it's a lot cheaper than MS... Free!

Found this:

Does StarOffice 8 Office Suite Office Suite include a component similar to the Microsoft Office Equation Editor component to create equations and formulas in reports/presentations?
Yes. StarOffice 8 software features StarOffice Math which is an equivalent component to Microsoft Office?s Equation Editor. It is capable of creating equations and formulas in reports/presentations.

If this is similar to OpenOffice, then you guys haven't read the article about how slow and bloated OpenOffice is. Look for it. It is either here or on HardOCP.

I always thought staroffice was openoffice but with support. That said, I have tried this before (star office) and it did pretty well. I takes excel and word files fine (did not try the other way around), but the gui looks less refined.
