MGM reveals movie storylines

Monday - January 15, 2007 | by Darren Sumner

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer today officially announced that it has greenlit the two Stargate SG-1 movies in development, which we reported on earlier (story): Stargate: The Ark of Truth and Stargate: Continuum. The company also released the first solid plot details for the two films.

Beware of spoilers below! Here's how the studio describes the storylines:

Stargate: The Ark of Truth
"As SG-1 searches for an Ancient artifact which they hope can defeat the armies of the Ori, they learn more Ori ships are about to be sent through the Supergate to launch a final assault on Earth. Daniel discovers that the artifact, the Ark of Truth, may be in the Ori home galaxy, and SG-1 embarks aboard the Odyssey to find it, and pre-empt the attack. The I.O.A. has a plan of their own and SG-1 ends up in a distant galaxy fighting two powerful enemies."

Stargate: Continuum
"While SG-1 attends the execution of Baal, the last of the Goa'uld System Lords, Teal'c and Vala inexplicably disappear into thin air. Carter, Daniel and Mitchell race back to a world where history has been changed: the Stargate program has been erased from the timeline. As they try to convince the authorities what's happened, a fleet of Goa'uld motherships arrives in orbit, led by Baal, his queen, Katesh (Vala), and his first prime, Teal'c. SG-1 must find the Stargate and set things right before the world is enslaved by the Goa'uld."

The first film will enter pre-production in March and begin filming in April, with an expected DVD release in the fall.

With disjointed weak stories like this its no wonder why the series was cancelled. It sounds like a mishmash of previous episodes with no real conclusion to the ori saga (though from the vagueness of the first description it sounds like it will be dealt with in there).

The second movie.. just weak, VERY weak. This has been done how many times now?

OMFG the stargate program!?1/1/!?!! no onez knowz about it letz go back in time now!

I like the stories involving time travel. :p

I'm just glad we'll be getting some more SG-1.

I like time travel to, but this story line has already been done, and very well, multiple times in SG1's series.

The Ark of Truth storyline looks better, but it will depend on how season 10 concludes that will make it or break it, I think.

At least we still have Stargate Atlantis, which has shaped up into an excellent show. They've also announced plans for a third stargate series, but haven't released any information about it at all.

So these aren't really big budget movie productions, right? They just sound like two 'super-episodes' of the regular series...?

The Ark of Truth sounds like it could bring a somewhat satisfying conclusion to the Ori saga but like others, I'm thinking "another time travel episode?" for the second movie.

with such a long running and good series, it's hard to create movies that don't just seem like yet another episode. but those do sound pretty weak, especially continuum. I wish they'd do something big like revealing the stargate program or something

So this means there won't be any conclusion to SG-1 this season? They'll just beat back the Ori but not defeat them?
That kinda sucks.

Well, there is a 3rd series on the drawing board. They'll need an enemy, and the Ori are an interesting race.

Damn. Thought it would be theater released with a higher budget. The Space channel just showed the movie (Kirt Russel) one last week during the Stargate timeslot, and I got reminded of how good stuff looks. I like the movie, wish the show bought the wormhole effect from them.
