Care to explain? I love the entire franchise (so far) and I've always thought that the shows give quite a nod to Star Trek, especially TNG.

Later series did, but with the first movie and SG1 it was different.

Instead of explorers you had the military. Instead of ships and transporting you traveled space with a stargate. Instead of a benevolent federation of planets you had a group of aliens who ruled like galaxy like organized crime bosses.

When the Asgard came along a lot of the Trek stuff came back in, I assume to pull all Sci Fi fans.

But the first movie and early SG1 was a lot of trying to break old conventions about Sci Fi that Trek set in place.

Honestly that is part of the reason I dislike the Assguards.

True story, (or possibly internet myth)

Independence Day was the sequel.

Roland Emmerich want to do a follow up where Ra's race heads to Earth to exact retribution for events of the movie Stargate.

When he lost the rights to the series it became generic aliens instead.

Mind Blown

The Stargate concept is very versatile. Other than the stargate itself I don't see how much in the way of continuity is required. Each story can stand on its own.

Think up an exotic planet, go visit it and make a movie about it. The concept of a stargate easily lends itself to creativity.

Whether the new movies will be any good or not is up to the writers' imagination and creativity.

This could go either way, we don't know enough yet. Btw, I beat you to this by over a month. ;)

If SG Universe wasn't so atrociously awful, we wouldn't be looking at a reboot and imagining. Still, the evolution of the franchise from SG1 and SGA made StarGate one of the big three SciFi franchises with Trek and Wars. And throwing away that legacy makes me uncomfortable.

Edit - If they want to reboot, they absolutely MUST use new characters and cast. People have seen nearly 2 decades of Richard Dean Anderson as Jack O'Neill, Amanda Tapping as Sam Carter, Michael Shanks as Dr Jackson, and Christopher Judge as Teal'c. There's simply no way that fans of the serious would accept any other actors in those roles. Especially with some of Hollywood's casting decisions of late, we could end up with Michael Cera cast as Dr. Jackson, Kristin Stewart as Sam Carter, and Robert Paterson as O'Neall.

Except the entire universe of aliens and internal earth politics and other things spawned by the TV series are being thrown out the window and forgotten about. The concept of the stargate is versatile. But to destroy all of the back story and depth in the universe created by the TV show just seems wrong.

I'm excited. However, I hope they don't stray too far from the TV Series. The TV Series just had a better concept of the Ga'uld(sp)and how they were what they were. The movie had some weird alien in a meat costume.

Not sure if true... Possible. I read that Stargate was supposed to be the first in a series of movies.

I completely forgot that Roland Emmerich did Stargate. He's got a hard on for wiping out the human race and genocide. It's entertaining though.

The man in charge has already stated his dislike of the TV series. He will be starting fresh.

I just hope they don't do a time travel premise and wipe out everything that happened and start fresh, a la Star Trek.

The problem with the Asguard was they never did anything. They were this powerful technologically superior race, but they didn't help anything. They didn't do anything.

Then when they _finally_ lend a hand with their technology... OH NO! Asguard technology is a beacon for the enemy to find and swarm to!

Stargate was an absolutely fantastic series, but they fell into the trap that most sci-fi series fall into - that the next season's boss enemy needs to be of magnitudes stronger than the previous.

meh, a Stargate movie reboot would only work if JJ Abrams did it for the trifecta. :p

I wonder if we apply reverse psychology and beg JJ Abrams to do the movie so much that he declines? That would be great!

(I don't ever want to see another Star Trek movie made, as bad as some of the next generation movies were, the reboot is umpteen times worse)

Well, they did use the quantum mirror a couple of times. They could claim this is one of the dimensions were nothing from the TV series existed. Or like in the Continuum movie, the last Goa'uld, Replicator, Asguard, Ancient, Tollan, or any other race that was wiped out, went back in time and changed things. The problem with Stargate is that it was on so long they covered just about everything, so anything is fair game.

....., I'm not sure Roland Emmerich would be my first choice, even though he did the first movie which I liked a lot. He has a tendency toward camp, even when he's not intending it.

Anonymous was his best movie and unlike any of his others. Its actually a serious movie. I would say the way the director chose so do something different sort of like Spielberg's serious movie, schindler's list.

I liked the first stargate movie and watched it several times.

If you watch the scene with the ship first attacking the city you will see them hanging from wires lol.

I liked the original movie. There was also a video game or MMO in the works that looked really good but got shutdown. The artwork was amazing.

It's not a Stargate SG-1 reboot. Supposed to be following from the movie. There won't be an SGC in Cheyenne Mountain, Gou'ald, Jaffa, zat guns, hell the movie didn't even cover going to multiple planets per se.

At least Trek admitted the stuff happened, even kept old.Spock around, and some of the same sort of things happen.

If I remember correctly it originally wasn't supposed to be a large intergalactic thing, it was just one planet or maybe a few select planets. I seem to remember Roland Emmerich saying something to that effect several years ago.

I'm still waiting for the SeaQuest DSV reboot.

Yea, I can't believe that show hasn't gotten a reboot.

Space Above and Beyond would be good, too.

Rebooting the same shows repeatedly or spinning them off multiple times is getting pretty tiresome.

The tv series actually did five alternate reality type reboots.

The movie Stargate:Continuum.

The episode (Moebius) where they go back in time to ancient Egypt and screw up the timeline and there was no Stargate Command and an alternative Jackson and Carter were recruited to go on a mission that would eventually return things almost completely to what originally happened.

The two quantum mirror episodes where Earths with similar history, but with some changes, were shown.

The episode where Carter was working on a planet wide stealth device but ended up in an alternate reality where General Landry was President.
