You can purchase a direct download version of GalCiv 2 straight from Stardock itself. Saves time and you can always opt to have a hard copy be sent to your address as well.

Idiots. They'll never have their sh***y drivers on my system even if I install the games that come with that crap.

I've been thinking about getting it since they've been getting good reviews. But it does annoy me that the direct download price is the same as buying the retail version.

Just like the RIAA. If I choose not to buy it I choose not to buy it. Theres not a damn thing they can do about it and I hope they go out of bussiness too.

Devs should take a clue that Starforce does more harm than good to them.

BTW Copy protection is a stupid concept in the first place anyway.

This is surprising how? Why would the prices of the same games differ? Plus it also offers you the option of having a physical copy sent to you.

well if I'm not getting a box/manual/cd, wouldn't it be nice to have a small discounted price? Also by not buying a retail copy, I'm bypassing their publisher, so more of the sales money goes to them. It'd be nice if they passed some of those savings on to us. I'm not demanding that they have to, just saying that it'd be nice.

I understand copy protection. but if I were a dev i'd just go with basic safedisk or somesuch. it deters the casual copiers and any non casual copier is going to bypass your protection anyways. on top of that I dont think safedisk creates that much issues for the consumer.

I think however the stardock/steam way of doing all online stuff with CD keys is much more preferrable. with the stardock having the advantage since it doesnt require you to be online at all times.

It installs as a device level driver and can thoroughly fvck your system up. Outside of that, the company is arrogant, see their challenge for someone to come to russia, where they reside, and prove that Starforce can cause system problems. And as if they weren't already asshats, like the OP says, they recently responded to a thread on their website about copy protection by direct linking to torrents of GalCiv2.

They can't have the price lower because it would piss off the retailers. That would be a disaster for Stardock.

and? what's the verdict?

I think it's fun. Has some bugs and issues still, some of which bother people to different extents ( for example, the economics model is almost incomprehensible - this drives some spreadsheet types to fits of incoherent ranting but other people don't care at all )
but overall I'm pretty happy with it.
