Stardew Valley

It's an enhanced Rune Factory + Harvest Moon.

Extremely impressive for a one-man effort. Insane actually, when typical jRPGs of that quality have a studio.

Also, it's on top of Steam Top Selling list! Beating all the AAA uber graphics games. haha.
 
It looks cool, but these types of games tend to get very repetitive after the cool factor wears off. It looks like a cross of Harvest Moon and Sims. That said, it appears very well made for what it is so I'll reserve judgement until I've seen what the late game looks like.
 
It's from one guy? If that's the case, it's very impressive.

It looks like a really good and refined 2D game you'd have bought on the SNES, or maybe the PS1 or Saturn (Saturn was quite a 2D powerhouse). I do like the graphics and the calming music (again, if that's from one guy and he's also good enough to compose something like that, then please someone Fedex the guy a box of cookies). It's not my type of game though, never played Harvest Moon either. But I can definitely understand why some people would love it. And the Steam page shows overwhelming positive reviews for now, good thing for the developer, he deserves it.
 
I have a few friends playing it, I watched a trailer but didn't see anything that compelling. I loved HM64 and played HM on GBC and SNES as well but nothing jumped out to me as "this is what sets this apart". While watching it I felt that if I wanted to do that again I'd just go play HM64 once more.

Sounds like you will eventually get up to 4 player co-op so I guess it might be worth it provided you can burn other people's fields. 😉
 
What sets it apart is that it's in Steam. I think only one of the Harvest Moons (and not the real one) made it to PC, so it's a novelty for people who like this type of games but don't own consoles.
 
I also think what sets it apart is the quality and amount of content. It's apparently very good, possibly at the top of the genre. I'm waiting for the dust to settle before I start playing as the dev appears to be tidying up a few things still.

I've been playing it for the past week and coming from someone who has played the HM and Rune Factory series on DS & Wii...

It's the same thing.

Same mechanics.

Town with events, same as in those games. Various NPCs to court. Same goals.

It's done well and is polished, but honestly it could easily be me playing those older games on an emulator.

This definitely shows there's a mass market appeal for these types of games for PC and its been ignored.

I guess if you're a fan of this genre, its worth it to play again, but there's nothing novel or more content about it.

Rune Factory series on DS is even better TBH.
 
I'm really enjoying Stardew Valley (50+ hours), but I haven't played any of the Harvest Moon or Rune Factory series so this is all new to me. I'm curious to see how multiplayer will work in the future.

I never played HM either nor had any desire too until I was well over 30. And now its games like Stardew Valley and Slime Rancher getting me excited about gaming again.
 
I never played Harvest Moon, played more Animal Crossing than I should probably admit to. So far I'm enjoying Stardew, you can play casually if you want, or you can go hardcore and min/max your farming. I like the variety of activities between farming, fishing (can be quite a challenging minigame), exploring, trying to make money vs going for specific objectives in the community center. It's a nice little casual game. Some will hate the graphics, but honestly the whole package is pretty dang impressive for being developed by a single person.
 
It looks impressive for a 1 man job and has a nice basic aesthetic, but I wouldn't call this awesome, it looks like just another busy work kinda game where you run around doing everything manually.
